When the Doctor had been shown the Untempered Schism, the vortex of space and time, as a child, he had run screaming from it and never looked back.
The Master had looked into it also.
It had broken him too, but in a different way.
Constantly he could hear it. Over and over. The beat. It had driven him mad.
It was only as the Master took him, rough and brutal, the Doctor biting his lip to not give the Master the pleasure of his screams, did he truly understand.
