Never Again

There he was once again. Standing next to a groom. He was always a best man, never the groom. He wanted to settle down. He wanted to be in love. He wanted to be wanted. This never happened. He was in love once. But it wasn't mutual. Rory Gilmore was the one being loved. She didn't love him back. To be more specific, she hated him. It was quite true. She said loud and clear. At that precise moment his heart was broken into millions of pieces. The one girl he loved uncontrollably hated him. But only recently had he made up with Rory. They had become good friends. They put their differences aside and instead of looking at the past, they decided to look forward and forget about the past. The past was the past and it was over. Nothing could ever change it. He fell in love with her all over again. This time he decided not to make the same mistake he made last time. He was going to tell her. One night, the night he was going to tell her he loved her, he took her to a beautiful Italian restaurant with candles and serene music. But that night he didn't get the chance to confess his love to her. She brought a friend along, a good friend. Her fiancé. Their wedding was in a year. Being one of Rory's bestest friends, her fiancé thought they would hit it off. So her fiancé, Jess, and him hung out. They came friends and 5 months to their wedding he was asked to be Jess' best man. How could he refuse? What kind of friend would he be? So he put his feelings aside and tried to make Rory happy. Rory was overly excited that her best friend was going to be part of her wedding. Then that night came. Rory walked down the aisle in her creamy, white, wedding gown and Jess waited by the alter. He never saw her smile any bigger. He never saw her any happier. He heard them repeat their vows and say "I Do". He saw them kiss and walk down the aisle. And then the reception came, the time when he had to put on a fake smile and congratulate the happy couple. He had to pretend he was happy for them. He saw the couple have their first dance. He could tell from her eyes that she was in love with Jess' and from Jess' eyes you could tell the feeling was mutual. She was beaming, she was actually beaming. He saw them dancing close together, acting like nothing around them existed but them. And while his heart was breaking, he was truly happy for her. Then their dance ended, and she walked over to him. She smiled at him and he smiled back. She asked him for one dance. Even thought he knew that if he danced with her, he might not be able to let her go, how could he refuse. She was his best friend and this was her wedding. So, he got up and danced with her. At the end, he didn't want to let go, but he knew that he had to. She gave him a peck on the cheek and thanked him for being her friend. She thanked him for being there for her and for just being him. Jess tapped her on the back and held her closely for another dance. Rory turned around and smiled at him. He smiled back and walked away. He always thought she was his, but for once in his life, he didn't get what he wanted. He never wanted anything this badly, but he had to let go. He couldn't hold onto the past, he had to look into the future. A future he imagined with Rory, but now he had to imagine a future without Rory. He had to find someone else but knew he didn't want anyone else. He only wanted to be loved by Rory. He only wanted to be wanted by Rory. But know he didn't want to be in love. He didn't want to be wanted.
