STRANDED alone... the first of many...
Picking up my father's bultoc, I raised it towards the head of the locust. His voice echoed in my head.
"One steady, paced shot is better than two hasty shots."
The iron sights were placed on the locust grunt's head who was now turning to face me. I squeezed and waited. My hand shook slightly as each gear slowly shifted into motion.
The trigger slowly began heading back for the grip. The hammer seemed to almost shift its weight, almost attempting to relax before its inevitable fall.
I felt as the black powder sparked to life, as the bullet shifted from it's position, as the lethal piece of metal exited the chamber.
I watched as the casing was ejected, as the bullet collided between its eyes, as its head went five different directions at once, as it finally crumpled to the ground.
The locust's longshot fell to the ground, and as the gears rolled in through the town, I picked it up. The locust were headed back to their lair, but not alone.
I faced the nearest emergence hole... it hit me that the COG was running out of places and people to defend. Shortly, very shortly there would be only one option remaining. Offense.
The survival bag my father had given me just before he died rested on my shoulders. Ten day's worth of food and water. My lucky hoodie and jeans. Two sets of dog tags, Anthony's old ones and Ben's spares.
In a letter, Ben had told me that he was being transfered to Delta Squad. A plan laid before my eyes with the thought of my younger brother.
Find Delta and join them. Ben needed to know Mom and Dad were dead. Anthony trusted me with the house when he was recruited into the COGs. I let him down, but I could still get Ben.
I zipped up my lucky hoodie and pulled a sling from my pack. Clipping it to the longshot, I slung the rifle across my shoulders. Emptying an ammo box I found myself with a satisfactory amount of ammunition.
30 rounds of bultoc and 18 rounds of longshot vs the locust army.
"Let's do it," I said and jumped down the hole.
