A/N: Me writing more stories? I know I have others to finish but shhhhhh
I've been busy with college and work but it's finally summer baby! Hopefully I'll get to write more since this is my #1 hobby. Anyway enough about me enjoy the story! (Also I know I went a little crazy with this tags I just hope to focus on a lot of characters in this)
Haku's family was known for one thing and one thing only, teaching. Her mother was a teacher, her stepfather was a teacher, her maternal grandparents were both teachers… and on and on it goes. So ever since she was a little girl it was expected that Haku would become a teacher too. While she wasn't thrilled about following in her parent's footsteps she realized once her final year of high school rolled around she realized she didn't really know what she wanted to do. All she did was study and play video games. She didn't even really have friends, she sat with a few of her classmates during lunch but she never really talked to them. She didn't wanna be left alone and letting a loner sit with them made them look like nice people. When college entrance exams rolled around she realized her parents wouldn't let her be a basement dwelling gamer forever so she decided to aim to be a teacher. Her mother was very proud of her and her stepfather got her foot in the door by putting in a good word for her to teach at his first school. (He worked at that high school for years but then met her mother, he had to move away from that town to be with her).
Haku did have a bit of control in her career, her mother was a math teacher and her father a history teacher so Haku chose to teach Japanese composition. Writing essays was one of her strong suits in school after all. College went by in the blink of an eye which surprised Haku. When she graduated her father drove her up to the city where his school was for an interview.
This school was interesting because it only took in 100 students maximum each year and each of those students were divided into how well they did on their exams. Students could fall into a certain low score on the exam portion but might be pushed forward anyway if they excelled in a fine art, sport or their parents gave generous donations to the school (this sounded slimy but she couldn't judge if she wanted a job). The kids who got in that way were all put into Class E. Luckily for Haku the previous Japanese composition teacher just retired, the retired teacher also happened to be the previous homeroom teacher for class 1-E.
Haku's parents helped her pack her things, they rented a truck and on March 31st Haku moved into her new studio apartment in a big city. She was kind of excited. When she was carrying a box up to her apartment. While she was doing this a young girl with black pigtails in a cute red dress ran up the stairs and suddenly bumped into Haku. The girl almost fell but held tightly onto Haku's dress to not fall. Haku almost lost her balance too but in what must only be a miracle in her eyes, neither fell.
"Yuki!" a teenage girl with long red hair came up to the little girl. She was wearing a uniform that looked like it belonged to one of the local middle schools.
"I told you over and over again not to make trouble for the people here," the teen berated the little girl.
"I'm sorry, I just wanted to race you to the top," the little girl said.
"She didn't bother me," Haku chimed in. "I'm just glad we didn't fall, that wouldn't have been pretty."
"Yes, that's good. Thank you for making sure she was okay," The teenage smiled gracefully at Haku and than took the little girl by the hand and lead her upstairs to the top floor. Haku looked at their retreating figures puzzled. There are only studio apartments here. Maybe the family is going through a tough time, single parent. Must be tough having a family in one of these small spaces though. Haku realized she didn't want to waste any time and continued her moving process.
The next morning she set her alarm criminally early, she isn't an early riser so she set alarms as early as she thought appropriate so she wouldn't be late to her first day at her new school. After 30 minutes of constant early alarms, Haku got up off her futon, put it up and then went to shower and brush her teeth. She then just prepared herself a bowl of cereal and watched the weather forecast on her phone (she wouldn't have a working TV and internet for two days, thank god she has unlimited data). It was supposed to be a sunny day, maybe some rain once the sunset. Once she was done with that she went to her closet and took out the only thing hung up in there, a nice suit. She had set them aside last night so she wouldn't have to dig through her box of clothes the next morning. She put the suit on, with her womanly figure it looked tighter than it should but there wasn't much she could do about that now she had to get going.
Haku rushed out the door, the school was only a half mile walk from work so she decided to walk it today. She considered buying a bike once she was a bit more settled. She put the address in her phone so she wouldn't get lost then started to play some relaxing game soundtracks as she walked. She walked with her headphones and peacefully walked to work. She was seeing students arrive already and headed quickly to the faculty office. There she saw the principal, a middle-aged man with greying teal hair talking to a woman with some really interesting curly pigtails. They both noticed her presence in the room almost immediately.
"Ah, you're here Yowane-sensei! The opening ceremony is starting soon but I've got to grab something from my office," he turned back at the teacher he was talking to. "Kasane-Sensei take her to the auditorium please."
"Yes sir!" The woman said cheerfully before walking up to Haku, a smile on her face. "Follow me."
She walked out the door and Haku scrambled to follow.
"Your gonna be teaching first-year Japanese comp, right? And your name is Yowane Haku?"
"That's right."
"Cool, my name is Kasane Teto and I teach Physical Education. We'll probably see a lot of each other because your desk is gonna be right next to mine!"
"That's nice," Haku said with a tired smile as they arrived at the auditorium. Teto dragged Haku to where other teachers were standing on the side but she leads her to a specific teacher in the crowd.
"KIYOTERU!" Teto called out perhaps too loudly.
"What?" An annoyed man in a suit turned around.
"This is the new class 1-E homeroom teacher! She teaches Japanese composition! Please be nice to her!" Teto said enthusiastically.
"Okay, nice to meet you," Kiyoteru held out his hand for Haku to shake. She returned the shake and then the principal cleared his throat on the stage.
"Welcome everyone! For some of you, it's a new year with us and for others, this is your first year in our esteemed halls. We welcome you all with open arms, you who beat the odds and made it into this wonderful school. I know you seniors are looking forward to our special internship programs, and the freshmen are gonna work hard too to keep a spot here. You are all here because you excel in something and we will make sure you excel in everything. I do have some excellent news this year. Class 1-E is has a new record low of students! This is great news! Just 2 years ago we got rid of the need for a class 3-E but now this year we've gone from a consistent number of 15 class 1-E kids to only 13! It brings tears to my old man eyes to think that our alumni are out there making the world a more intelligent place. So 3rds years keep working hard with the goal in mind to influence our very world and freshmen keep working hard!"
After that, the principal stepped down and the vice principal stepped up and began a speech of her own but Haku stopped listening as she thought of what the principal said. The whole system with class E didn't make any sense and was he talking down on the class or praising them? It sounds like both.
"He rigged the number," Kiyoteru who had been standing next to me and leaned over and whispered in her ear.
"What do you mean?" Haku asked.
"Much to his wives dismay the principal's daughter ended up in your class. I heard some of the admins talking about it but he ended up dropping two students who showed a lot of potential all so his little princess could be in a record-breaking class E," Kiyoteru explained.
"I knew this place was slimy but dang…" Haku whispered back.
"Stop gossiping you two," Haku turned around to see a bored looking woman with blonde hair staring them down. "You know what happens if you get caught talking shit about the Hatsune's" the woman whispered.
"Just wanted to let her into the loop Lily…" Kiyoteru sighed and we went back to paying attention. But instead, Haku's eyes caught those of a girl with long teal hair and pretty green eyes staring at her. Even tho this girl was probably 15 or 16 she looked so jaded. Soon the tealette realized she had been starting at Haku with a daze in her eyes so she quickly turned away. The assembly soon ended and Haku headed to the staff room with Teto and Kiyoteru to the faculty room ro pick up her attendance sheet. She then headed to her class where a bunch of students were sitting in the 13 desks, some talking to each other and others just looking nervous or unenthused to be here. Regardless Haku cleared their voice to get their attention. Nothing. She tried again. Still nothing. Finally, the teal-haired girl from the assembly stood up and pounded her hands on her desk as hard as she could. That definitely got everyone's attention.
"Our homeroom teacher is trying to get out attention," the girl gave everyone and angelica smile as she said this and that sat back down gracefully. She was kind of like a swan to Haku.
"Thank you." Haku gave a thankful smile in the girl's direction. "I am your homeroom and Japanese composition teacher, I hope we can all work hard this year and have fun," Haku said a bit too stiffly to her tastes. Her students just stared at her.
"I will now call the roll, Akita Neru?"
"Here." A girl with long blonde hair raised her hand and didn't even look away from her phone.
"No phones in class Akita-san," Haku said. The girl just ignored her and Haku decided to drop it since it's only a half day anyway.
"Aoki Lapis?"
"H-Here!" A voice squeaked out from one of the back seats. The cute young girl just barely raised her hand above her short blue hair.
"Furukawa Fukase?"
"Here." Haku turned her attention to a bored looking boy in the back of the class. He had burns on one side of his face that was mostly being covered by his red hair. Haku tried not to stare too long as she marked the boy down as here and kept going.
"Hatsune Miku?"
"Here!" The teal haired girl raised her hand up into the air. Oh no this girl was the principal's daughter? She was staring at her during assembly did she hear them? When Haku got a better look at the Hatsune girl thought she saw her in a different light. Her smile was lovely but her eyes seemed hollow? Her skin was pale like snow and she seemed almost too skinny… She realized she must have been staring too long when she heard a voice.
"I know she's pretty but some of us want to go home sooner rather than later!" A girl with short green hair and red glasses complained. But she had a smile on her face which meant that the girl just meant to tease her. Haku wasn't gonna let it bother her and decided to just continue with roll call.
"Kaai Miki?" Haku asked. Nobody spoke up. "Kaai Miki?"
"I guess she's not here," A girl with long black hair commented.
"Lucky for her she didn't have to hear all those boring speeches…" A girl with short blonde hair chimed in.
"Well, I'm moving on than… Kagamine Len?"
"Here!" A boy with blonde hair in a ponytail raised his hand.
"Kagamine Rin?"
"Also here!" The girl with short blonde hair that spoke before raised her hand with a big smile. She was sitting next to the blonde boy. They look so similar and have last names so they must be twins.
"Kazeno Yuma?" Nothing again. "Kazeno Yuma?"
"Just give him a sec," the black haired girl spoke up. Suddenly the boy with pink hair in a beanie spoke up with a monotone voice. "Here."
"Alright… Megpoid Gumi?"
"Hereeeee!" The greened haired girl from before responded with much enthusiasm.
"Momome Momo?"
"Here ma'am," A girl with long pink hair and green eyes put down the book she was reading to respond, she then lifted it back up to read again. It looked like a children's picture book.
"Nekomura Iroha?"
"Here nya~" The girl said. Haku looked up to the girl with a pink ponytail with a look that could be called disgust. But maybe it was just confusion. When Haku looked at her she just laughed. "I'm just yanking your chain sensei, wanted to see how much I could weird you out on the first day!"
Haku blinked a few times before she looked down at her paper and marked the girl as present. She then took a deep breath and continued.
"Sakamoto Mizki?"
"Here," he girl with black hair and a gorgeous face that was sitting next to Yuma responded.
"And lastly Utatane Piko?"
"Here!" A shy boy with white hair and green/blue eyes said as quickly as possible. He averted her gaze and batted his white eyelashes a bit.
"Alright, so that's mostly everyone. I was told to give you guys something to do today so I want you to pull out some paper. We're gonna write an essay." Some students groaned.
"It's not too bad and as long as you do it you'll get a 100. I just wanna see where everyone is writing-wise, it will help me teach you all personally," Haku said sweetly. One good thing about having such a small class is she can customize their lessons to each of their skill levels. Something Haku wished she could have had with math in high school.
"Alright, I want you to write about why you decided to come to this school. It's got to be either one double-sided page or two single-sided pages. If you can't fill that much page up about why you are here than just write about what type of person you are. Write about friends or family. The main point is to use proper grammar and put together proper paragraphs," Haku explained. Len raised his hand. "Yes, Kagamine-kun?"
"Do we have to have an intro and conclusion?" Len asked.
"You can add those if you want but it's not required." Than Iroha raised her hand.
"Do these have to be done today?" Iroha asked.
"No you can turn them in tomorrow morning if you want but if you get it done before the early dismissal bell than you will have free time when you get home." Than Gumi raised her hand.
"Don't you think this school is kind of like the academy in Assassination Classroom?" Gumi asked.
"In what?" Haku looked confused.
"It's a manga," Neru chimed in who was still on her phone.
"And an anime," Momo added.
"Yeah I read the manga, we are in the lowest class trying to rise to the top! Hopefully we won't have to kill you though sensei!" Gumi said.
"K-Kill me?" Haku was even more confused.
"This school isn't exactly like that, in the anime the school was constantly out to make sure the class didn't succeed. This school wants us to succeed but there are definitely people here looking down on us." Miku added not looking up from the notebook she was writing in.
"Why don't we just focus writing our essays for now, and if you run out of things to write about Gumi you can write about how this manga of yours reminds us you of the school."
"Will do!" Gumi said throwing herself into writing her paper with determination. She was the first one done. By the time the day had ended the only people to not turn essays were Neru, Fukase, Yuma and Piko. She reminded those who didn't finish to have the assignment ready to turn in the morning. The bell rang and students started to exit. Just as the last student, Piko, was leaving some ran into him full force knocking him to the ground.
"A-Are you okay Utatane-san?" Haku walked over to him.
"I'm so sorry!" A girl bowed before the two. She then lifted her head up and Haku instantly recognized her. It was the red-haired teenager from the other day.
"I can't believe I overslept! I was so excited I didn't go to sleep until the sun was rising!" the girl said apologetically.
"Are you Kaai Miki?" Haku asked.
"Yes, I am. God! I can't believe I missed my whole first class! Is there anything I missed?" Miki asked.
"I just assigned an essay, it's for me to test everyone's writing abilities. Write about why you want to come to this school and I'll give you a 100," Haku explained to Miki.
"That's it, yeah I can do that! And I'll make sure to get to bed early tonight!" Miki said as she gave Haku a smile before waving goodbye and dashing out. It took a second to realize that Piko was still in the room.
"I'm about to leave the classroom you should head out now," Haku said.
Piko was in some sort of trance that Haku snapped him out of. "O-Oh so sorry!" The boy said as he picked his bag off the ground and ran out. Haku saw a faint blush on his face as he left. Haku than went over to her desk to pack up her bag. She put the essays in a folder than grabbed the attendance sheet. She looked at it for a minute before reaching for her pen and marking Miki absent.
"It will give the poor girl one less thing to worry about, it is just her first day," Haku said to herself as she finished packing her bag. She then looked out at her empty classroom with a smile.
This certainly is an interesting class but I won't let them down. I will help them all succeed and follow their dreams. With that thought in her mind, she closed the door and headed towards the faculty room. A genuine smile on her face.
A/N: I knew this was gonna kind of be like assassination classroom when I started the first paragraph so I thought an in-universe callout to the fact. I never finished that anime though so I don't know maybe it's not similar at all. Please leave a review whether you loved it or hated it. Any critiques will help me grow as a writer :)
