At first, he thought that she had fallen on purpose.
Oh, she'd climbed onto the dock no problem, but then her sandal supposedly hooked onto something and she fell into his arms. He wasn't an idiot, despite what most thought. That dock had no loose boards, and there was nothing on it that she could've tripped over, but still, she ended up collapsing against him. Of course, the same automatic doubts that were fucking engraved in this brain just had to cross his mind: 'no one would ever want you', 'nothing but a disgrace', 'damned half-breed.' Those almost made him push her away and go hide in the trees.
Then, she looked up at him.
Her normally stoic eyes had… emotion. They had depth. And they weren't hateful. Those beautiful, almond-shaped, brown eyes were dancing with nervousness, the 'butterflies in your stomach' type of nervousness.
He had thought that she had fallen on purpose, but after he tossed away his oar, wrapped his arms around her, and she embraced him back, he couldn't have cared less.
