Ah, October. The air is chilly, the leaves are crunchy, and two lives are about to change forever.
It's 7 p.m. on a Wednesday night. Kate Beckett has been off all day. The most she's done today is change clothes and pour a glass of wine. She's been enjoying her day off. She's just about to settle on the couch with one of her favorite books when there's a knock at the door.
As soon as she opens the door she can't help but laugh. Richard Castle is standing there with two pumpkins, one in each hand, and a lantern hanging between his teeth.
He holds one pumpkin out for her to take and then removes the lantern from his mouth.
"Hey Beckett!" he happily exclaims.
"Hey Castle, what're you doing here?"
"Oh I was in the neighborhood…and I just thought you might like to have some Halloween fun tonight."
He's got a look in his eyes that she can't ever say no to, so she plays along.
"And what did you have in mind, Pumpkin King?"
"Why, pumpkin carving of course!"
He's still standing there smiling so Beckett shakes her head and asks him in.
"I thought the rooftop would be a good place to dig out the pumpkin guts." says Castle.
Not a bad idea, thinks Kate.
"I'll grad a jacket and meet you up there."
Once up on the roof they discuss designs for their pumpkins. Beckett decides to go with the traditional happy face pumpkin. Castle has other plans, but he won't tell her what they are.
They are busy carving and having conversation. Kate keeps trying to look over at Castle's pumpkin but he's on guard, turning the opposite way of her view each time. Getting frustrated, she goes back to her pumpkin.
Once finished, it's the big reveal time. Castle pulls out tea light candles from his jacket pocket and passes them over to Kate. She sets her pumpkin aglow and turns it around for him to see.
"That's one happy pumpkin, Beckett."
"A happy pumpkin to end my happy day." she says with a smile.
"Okay, Castle, your turn. Let me see what you've got."
He looks nervous now and she can't figure out why. He hesitates.
"Come on, Castle. Don't be chicken."
Sighing, or breathing in some brevity, she can't tell, he turns his pumpkin around and her heart stops.
Will you be my girlfriend?
Kate looks at the pumpkin, up at Castle, and then back to the pumpkin, speechless.
Castle, feeling foolish for trying this stunt, lowers his head and sighs.
"I know this was stupid to d-"
"Yes."
Did she just say yes? Castle looks at her with wide eyes.
"Yes, Richard Castle, I'll be your girlfriend."
Not able to contain his joy, Castle jumps up from where he was seated and tackles Beckett with a hug. She giggles at his antics and pulls back from him once he's settled down a bit.
"Really?" he asks.
"Really, Castle." Kate replies
They're nose to nose, the cold wind ruffling both their hair. Kate leans in and Castle meets her. Their lips meet and they both sigh. Pulling back, they both smile at each other.
"I can't believe you said yes."
"All ya had to do was ask, Castle."
Castle sits down beside Beckett and grabs her hand. They sit there for a few moments watching their pumpkins flicker in the wind. Beckett shivers.
"Cold?"
"Mm, a little. It's windy up here."
"Let's go back inside and warm up?" asks Castle.
"I can think of a way to just do that."
