Rose POV
I return from the cave with a heavy heart. Though many great guardians have returned we have lost some loyal guardians too. We killed many strigoi and the rest of the pack have fled. I guess they were surprised by our number and our last minute decision to send fire moiri too, one that could have backfired horribly.
Still we are not without our injury. The medical ward is there checking us all out. They look happy just to see us alive to be honest. They have many nurses attending to the worst of us. "Your fine, just a few cuts and bruises, get some rest"the nurse waves me away. I'm glad to leave and scan the growing crowd welcoming us back. I spot a worried looking Lissa with Christian hanging off her arm. Eddie looks concerned.
Finding them I rush over eager to calm their worries. Lissa looks at me and I feel her healing energy rise. I shake my head. "It's not as bad as it looks. The nurse told me just to rest."
She understands and hugs me. "I was so worried!" she says "you made it back" she says happily. Then the battle suddenly seems unimportant. I made it back but a lot didn't, Demetri didn't. I can still see his face as he was bitten and hear his yell for me to run. He wanted me to be safe and protect Lissa. It was both our assigned roles when Lissa and I graduate.
I feel Lissa's concern through our bond. "Demetri didn't make it" I say carefully.
Shock registers in our bond. Demetri was a god on our campus. He seemed immortal too us all. But the next thing I'm going to say could make her even more shocked. "Demetri meant more to me than any trainer should. We hid our love for a reason; it could ruin both of us. I guess that's not an issue now.
I expect to feel her disgust and anger but feel her hug me tighter. "I'm sorry" she whispers.
It's a relief on my battle tired body when I finally close my eyes.
