Lavender Brown had known this would be a bad idea from the start, as she danced nervously in the center of the dance floor, waiting for Parvati to show up with her 'date'. A date with someone she didn't even know, on New Year's Eve no less. Of course, there was a chance it could be someone she knew... Or someone she hated, or a girl. The very thought made her cringe slightly.
She danced, somewhat awkwardly, to the loud music which filled the Great Hall for a few more minutes, wondering when her best friend was going to reappear and put her out of her misery. Just as the New Year drew closer, Parvati turned up, a wide grin on her face.
"Lavender!" she said, having to shout over the music to be heard. "You're not allowed to see who it is yet, okay? I've got to put a spell on you, to make sure you can't see them."
Lavender opened her mouth to protest, but Parvati's wand was already in her hand and the spell had already been sent Lavender's way. Nothing changed in Lavender, she could still see perfectly clearly, hear everything fine and, as far as she was aware, her sense of smell, taste and touch had not been affected. With a grin, Parvati disappeared into the crowd again…
Only to come into view moments later, dragging a person with her. Well, Lavender guessed it was a person, seeing as it was walking on two legs, was the same height as the average person of her age, and was mumbling something into Parvati's ear. The only problem was, Lavender couldn't see the person. She could only see a vague outline, and in the middle they were transparent, though the people dancing behind her were slightly blurred.
Ten… nine…
"Right, you two!" Parvati commanded over the shouts and screams of the surrounding crowd, a grin gracing her features, "You have to trust me on this one."
Eight… seven…
Lavender glared at Parvati, who simply beamed back. "You have to kiss—"
"WHAT?" Lavender yelled, interrupting her friend.
Six… five…
"Kiss on one!"
Four… three…
The other person made a loud objection to this, though Lavender could only hear a jumble of words. For a moment, she couldn't help but think this spell was very clever. Parvati smirked and stood behind Lavender, ready to push her forwards if needed.
Two… ONE!
Lavender stood there awkwardly, until she felt herself being roughly shoved forwards. Her lips crashed onto the other persons' as shouts of 'Happy New Year' went up around them. Her lips lingered against the other persons' for a second, her eyes widening in shock, until she decided it couldn't hurt to kiss them…
She kissed tenderly for a moment, her eyelids fluttering shut. When the other person realised what was happening, they started to kiss back. Slowly the kiss deepened, as other couples around them started kissing too. Lavender couldn't help but breath in the scent of the person, pleased to discover that (by the cologne they were wearing) he was a male. For a male, he has soft lips, she thought, He also happens to be a very good kisser…
Around thirty seconds later, they finally pulled apart. As their lips broke, the spell was lifted, and Lavender was finally able to see who it was Parvati had set her up with.
"Fred!" she gasped, at the same time as Fred Weasley gasped her name.
