On nights like these: where the sky seems boundless, stretching from one end of the world to the other, where the sky is dark enough for the stars to shine, where the only sound in the night are the insects in the field, Tris and Four train. It is a routine which they keep up ever since Dauntless and Abnegation were broken and destroyed. The peaceful times in Amity they have right now, to them, are more or less surreal, like a bubble that could burst at any minute, like a bubble that is floating in the air, yet dangerously near the ground. Four always reminds her, It's better to be prepared, just in case. She knows he can't shake the guilt of attacking her away when he was under the control of Erudite. She doesn't blame him, she tells so many times. But he shakes his head, a little morose, and all she can do is to kiss him lightly on the cheek to distract him.
They start with several self-defence techniques, with Four attacking and Tris defending. She is getting better at this, anticipating his moves right before he does any damage to her. They fight without any protective gear. The protective gear is useless, given that they have seen so much more horror and experienced life and death scenarios. To pretend as if protective gear would protect them was just plain naive. Four charges at Tris, and she does a flip to avoid him, landing a few metres away from where he is. He smiles slightly, impressed. Her heart flutters momentarily, for he is seldom impressed by her moves. Allowing herself to be distracted only for that moment, she rocks on the balls of her feet, getting ready to dodge Four's next attack. He comes at her again, and narrowly misses her, much to his chagrin. She is getting faster with all the training they have been having, and her small size is an advantage, he always reminds her.
Afterwards, they exchange- Four defends and Tris attacks. She doesn't charge at him like he does to her. It's a guy thing, she feels. Instead, she waits. She waits until he gets a little impatient, when he starts losing his concentration. Feinting left and right to confuse him, she finally attacks, tripping him from the back. He falls, but takes her along with him, his legs tangle with hers before he falls. She lands on top of him, both of them breathless and her straddling him. He sees her uncomfortable expression and remembers her fear of intimacy. He doesn't want to push her too far. After all, she has been rather understanding towards his fear of heights, and patient in teaching him to control his fear. She loves the rush of adrenaline that comes from jumping off great heights or sailing through the air, and she shares that joy with him, allowing him to forget his fear temporarily when he is with her. He figures that he should be equally understanding towards her.
Turning slightly under her, Four tries to untangle himself from Tris. She stops him, to his surprise. He looks at her, waiting for her to change her mind. The expression in her eyes is soft, and she shakes her head slightly before he wraps her in his arms and captures her mouth with his. His lips move against hers, inviting them to part. He takes her lower lip into his mouth and sucks lightly on it, causing her to gasp in surprise. Immediately, he pulls back and searches her face, but she pulls him back towards her and kisses him again with a greater intensity that both of them fall back onto the field. His hands travel to the back of her neck, and move downwards, skimming her sides before going back to cup her face again. This time, she pulls away, smiling while pulling him to his feet. With an eyebrow arched upwards, she hints to him to be on his guard as they continue training.
