If I were to ask you about the end of the world, what would you say? What would it sound like? Would you imagine it for me? What do you hear, do you hear the screams of the doomed, the thunder of explosions and the sky breaking open with thousands of bullets being fired, the rain of blood falling down? You are wrong.
Silence. A deadly, heavy silence that chills you to the bone. What was once peaceful now feels more threatening than anything else. That is the true sound of the apocalypse. It wasn't until he walked down the very path that people always sang about that he realized that. Yes, alongside his lifelong companion he walked down the infamous path…the path to the end. It was like no other feeling, the knowledge that you are walking towards a certain death, yet you keep walking because what choice do you have? And they walked, in this terrifying silence, past ruins of buildings that were once full of life, full of people who had no clue of their impending doom. And they, too, were silent, calm, not like you would expect from two people, no, mere children, whose eyes had witnessed more death and destruction than anyone else, children who could do nothing but watch calmly, helplessly, as the world crumbled around them. Everything they had ever touched was now gone, erased until no proof of humanity's existence was left. It was only them, two people who were betrayed by the very humanity that now lay broken around them, pieces of lives that once were and that would never again be. And through all that, it was silent, and it felt wrong, because it was the proof that they were the last lives left on the planet Earth. But neither one of them would last, they were just as fleeting as everything around them. Insignificant, just unfortunate beings that had no choice but to wait for their inevitable destruction.
And when the end finally came, they were silent, but even though it had been expected, when one of them was swallowed by the ground that split open under his very feet, the other broke the silence, hoping it would bring him back. But not even the screams of the boy as he watched his soulmate die once again could fill the void in his heart created by the lack of his existence. Then, with one last scream, he, too, was erased from the planet, and the silence returned. That silence, which no one would ever hear, was the only proof that they had, at one point in time, existed. The last life, the last light on Earth had vanished, and all that remained was silence.
