When Lily is born, it's after midnight and St Mungo's hospital is in shambles- people rushing around, gleefully smiling and celebrating New Year's Day. But inside their room, Ginny and Harry are steadily going mad. It's the end of a year, one with over nine months of sickness and pregnancy clothes, and they had had enough. But finally she's born, and they don't hear the parties or the people, they hear only their baby girl. Her cry is pure and sweet in the din of New Year's fireworks, and to Harry, it's the most delightful sound he has ever heard.

Lily turns three in 2012, and the world doesn't end. She smiles and glows at her party, Lily's Party- as the fireworks light up and then fade in a star-less sky, as the scent of candles fills the Burrow. People mill around, smiling and laughing and drinking; and little Lily cheerfully plays around ankles and balloons with Hugo and her toy broomstick. Her brothers and cousins laugh with their friends, whilst Lily's head droops on her father's shoulder as she fights to stay up to blow out her three candles.

"Stupid New Year." Lily is self-centred in the most adorable way, and spends her early birthdays sitting on her window sill sulking, because her parents like the New Year better. His birthday is so much more important than hers. It's bigger, better and much more fun. He always gets a big party, everywherein the world, whilst Lily has to wait until the late afternoon, when the hangovers have passed. "But," remarks Lysander, "At least you get all the presents."

On her ninth birthday, Lily starts making New Year's resolutions. They are long and silly, drawn with crayons on the back of a box of Wizard-Os, but Lily is proud of them. She doesn't show them to anyone, even her best friend Lysander, and tucks it under her bed. But at midnight, at the very end of her year, before she turns 9, she thinks about them and wonders silently.

It's Lily's first year at Hogwarts, and she spends her holidays there. New Year's Eve brings wintery snow and laughter, and when Lysander and Lily and all their other Gryffindor friends have finished the best snowball fight, they curl up in the common room, smiling and drinking hot chocolate. To Lily it is the best end to the best year.

Lily's first kiss was from John, a smart-ass Ravenclaw and the first guy to ask her out (even if he got her Lilies, again). He kisses her under the mistletoe at midnight, and His mouth tastes of cheese sticks and jelly beans, and Lily hates every single minute of it.

Half the room is drunk, bottles of firewhiskey and butterbeer lying on the floor of the Slytherin Common Room. Lily is having a great time with her boyfriend Noah, captain of the Hufflepuff Quidditch team. Lysander, who wasn't invited, isn't.

Lily is 17 when she sees her perfect boyfriend Noah snogging Melissa behind the Quidditch stands. But it's Lysander who puts Lily's heart back together again, like he always does.
