-Chapter One-

I sucked in a sharp breath as I stared upwards through the tree leaves that blocked my view of the sky. "This is so uncomfortable; how can people take naps up here?" I quietly asked myself as I shifted around on the tree branch I had been laying on. It was such a quiet, peaceful day and a boring one as well. With nothing to do I found myself wandering around and doing random things, such as climbing trees and laying on different branches. "I could head back to work" I mused aloud before giving a small snort and shaking my head. "I'm sure something more interesting is happening down on the beach than back at the restaurant."

Shifting around on the tree branch I hopped off and started to make my way to the cliff side nearby that gave the perfect view of the island's beach as well as the ocean. It was a spot I adored as it allowed me to watch the ocean waves, some days they were peaceful and other days they were rough but no matter what they were always beautiful. 'I wonder what it'd be like to sail out on the open sea, like actually go out and have an adventure instead of desperately looking for a new home to use as a hiding spot' I thought, coming to a stop right at the edge of the cliff side. My face fell a bit at the lack of activity going on at the beach even it wasn't safe from this boring day. With a heavy sigh, I let my body fall backwards onto the grass and stared up towards the cloudless sky, blowing a stray piece of hair out of my face.

My long hair was styled to look short and then covered with a bandanna, all in a desperate attempt to make it look more boyish. Why did my hair have to be style in such a way? The same can be asked why I was wearing a chest binder as well. To put it more simply, not many people take female swordsmen seriously like they do male swordsmen. But that's to be expected, even I couldn't take myself seriously whenever I looked in a mirror and saw my short physic.

Though I feel that isn't enough of a clear answer to the questions at hand. This island had recently taken up to a new kind of entertainment, it was suggested by the leader's eldest son three years ago. It was a unique form of entertainment that the villagers seemed to adore. It gave them both entertainment and money. But at the same time, it seemed to cost them visitors as people and pirates alike started to avoid the island in fear of losing all they had.

The idea was simple, the villagers would put their best fighter out front to verse against the visitors' best fighter, if they won then they got to stay free without having to spend any of their precious beli. If they lost, well then, they lost everything they owned. There was an alternate option were if one doesn't want to fight they pay a simple fee. Either way it was a cheap tactic set up by greedy people, but who was I to rain on their parade when I was no better. Yes, I was the fighter the villagers put out there and so far, it's been nothing but a winning streak after winning streak for them.

As for the male get up. Aaron, the leader's eldest son, wasn't too pleased that a woman was the one the villagers wanted put out there. Not because they had faith in me, but because my brothers and I simply had to find some way to make it up to them for causing them hell since we arrived. Wasn't our fault we had to steal to survive or get into fights to protect ourselves. As for why one of my brothers wasn't picked to take the position as a fighter, simply because Cloud and Sora did more work at the restaurant then I did that the owner wasn't going to let them go so easily.

So, that left only me. Aaron's solution to this predicament, was to have me dress like a man. Says that no one that came around would have taken them seriously if they put a woman out on the battle field. Explains why he still hasn't found him a wife yet. My ears twitched to the sound of loud chatter, coming down from the shoreline followed by the gentle waves splashing against something.

Sitting up, I looked down at the beach, my eyes lighting up the minute I spotted the skull and cross bones on the ship's flag. Though, it was strange that the skull was wearing a straw hat, but who was I to question these pirate's jolly roger. My eyes scanned the people that exited the ship and stood around the beach, a woman and four men. Out of the five people only one of them seemed over excited as he looked around the beach in a childlike wonder, despite it looking no different from any other beach. I chuckled at this before my gaze was drawn away from him and towards a man with strange colored hair.

"Is that…no that's not possible" I said, squinting my eyes as I stared down the man before shaking my head and pushing myself to stand. Stretching my arms upwards I turned my back on the newcomers and started making my way back into the village. "Wonder how Cloud and Sora are doing?" I asked myself as I walked through the village, waving at those who were polite enough to give simple hellos.

"And where the hell have you been?" was the first thing I heard when I pushed open the doors to the restaurant and entered. My older brother, Cloud, stood there with one hand on his hip while the other one held a broom. His eyebrows were furrowed in irritation as he waited for me to answer, the question had also caught a few customers' attention as they looked between the two of us.

"Where do you think?" I questioned, walking pass him and towards another door that lead to the kitchen.

"I swear, sometimes it feels like you and Sora don't even care if you get fired" I heard Cloud mutter under his breath as he shook his head and went back to sweeping. While the customers who were watching the encounter went back to their own conversations with those at their tables.

"I don't, but not so sure about Sora" I mumbled as I walked into the kitchen and grabbed hold of my apron off the hanger.

"He's right you know; amaze the boss even keeps you two around. Well I understand why he keeps Sora, the kid knows his way with people. But you, you barely do anything around here" the chef said, seemingly on his break as he stood near the back-door smoking.

"I brighten up the place with my sparkling personality, can't you tell? I'm just overflowing with positivity" I sarcastically stated as I tied my apron around my waist.

"Watch it, sweet cheeks, your dressed like a dude so I have free reign to knock you out if I wanted to" the chef mumbled, turning his attention away from me as I just scoffed.

"Yeah, sure" I said, rolling my eyes as I walked back out into the main area and over to were Sora was sitting. He was at a table all by his lonesome self, papers and crayons surrounding him as he seemed focused on what he was doing. Now, Sora wasn't much of an artist, but he wasn't exactly bad nor was he extremely good. He was just good enough that you could at least tell what it was he was drawing. My arms wove themselves around his neck as I rested my chin on top of his head and peered down at his drawing, it was a mermaid.

"A mermaid? Weren't you obsessing over dogs the other day?" I asked.

"Yeah, but I heard a few fishermen earlier talking about mermaids and wanted to draw one. Think it'll look nice on the wall back home" Sora mumbled as he referred to the one wall in the small house my brothers and I lived in. It was a wall just dedicated to Sora's drawings, all of them pinned there to brighten up the bland and rundown house we had taken shelter in when we first arrived to this island.

"Have you done any work today?" I whispered, casting a quick look at Cloud who was emptying out the dustpan.

"No."

"That explains why he's in a bit of a mood, I don't blame him though. I'd be moody to if I did all the work while everyone else just lazed around" I said, pulling back away from Sora to lean against the table while he nodded his head. Our attention was soon drawn towards the entrance of the restaurant as the double doors were pushed opened and those pirates from earlier entered. Our attention stayed on them as we watched them walk all the way to the back of the restaurant to take a seat at one of the tables located in the corner.

"Oh boy, looks like you'll be busy today" Sora mumbled as he looked at the group before his eyes landed on the green haired male. "Hey, doesn't he look like-"

"Yeah, I noticed that to" I interrupted him, shaking my head as I crossed my arms. "But, I doubt its actually him."

"How many men do you know with green hair?"

"Good point" I said, chuckling as I pushed myself away from the table and reached into the front pocket of my apron, retrieving a small notepad and pen. "What do you think? Should we serve them before you know who shows up?" I asked.

"I don't think that'll be a good idea, he'll probably blow up in a fit of anger if you do that" Sora said, scratching the back of his head as he laughed. I nodded my head in agreement, silently mulling over if I wanted to deal with one of Aaron's temper tantrums just for a few minutes of amusement. Though I didn't get to think on it for long as the doors to the restaurant immediately burst opened as the man himself walked in, a look of excitement on his face as he scanned the area before his chocolate colored eyes landed on the group of newcomers.

"Oh brother" I heard Cloud grumbled as he watched the leader's son fast walk towards the back table, some customers standing up and following him to crowd around the pirates. "Skylar" the blond said as he leaned his broom against the wall and walked over to me.

"Yes, my dear, lovely older brother?" I questioned, batting my eyelashes before snickering as the back of my head was swatted at.

"Don't do that" Cloud said, rolling his eyes before sighing. "You know the deal, though you're going to have to run back home seeing how none of us brought your swords with us today."

"I know and here we thought it was going to be any other normal, boring old day with nothing exciting to do" I said.

"Skylar, come over here please" my ears perked up to the sound of Aaron's demand, turning my attention towards him I blinked my eyes at the multiple pairs of eyes that had decided to direct their attention towards me. Before I could give a snarky response, I felt Cloud rest his hand on the small of my back and push me forward giving a low 'don't start' in the process.

"Yes, sir" I said giving a mock salute as I strutted over towards the brunet, weaving my way through the crowd before coming to a stop right beside him.

"This here is our best fighter, I've already gone over the details with them and even gave them the chance to pay the fee though this young lady seems dead set on the fight" Aaron said, smiling as he motioned to an orange haired woman who clutched a napkin that seemed to have something written on it in her hand. He must have written down the total fee for her.

"Okay" I said, clearing my throat and lower my voice to make it sound a little deeper. It was much harder than it sounded. "So, who's the lucky person I get the pleasure to go up against?" I asked.

"Eh?" the orange haired woman said looking around the table, her eyes looking between three certain men. One wearing a straw hat, a blond, and the green haired male. "Well…" she said trailing off before her attention was directed towards the raven-haired man wearing a straw hat, raising his hand and waving it back and forth.

"Me! Me!" he exclaimed.

"Now hold on, first tell me, what exactly is your fighting style?" the woman asked, seemingly ignoring the raven-haired man.

"Well I have dabbed a bit into fist fighting and held a gun once or twice in my life, never doing that again it was just plain awful, but as for my fighting style I'm more of a sword kind of 'guy'. Couldn't you tell?" I asked, smiling innocently at the woman as she raised an eyebrow.

"Yeah, sure. We nominate Zoro to be our fighter for this little…game?" the woman said, pointing her finger towards the green haired man while the raven-haired man whined in disappointment. I felt my breath get caught in my throat the minute I heard that name, the one that plagued my memories and wouldn't leave me be in my loneliest of days.

"Uh, s-sure" I stumbled over my words before clearing my throat and nodding my head.

"Great!" Aaron exclaimed as he clapped his hands together and grinned. "Shall we get started?"

-Later-

"Go get him, Skylar!" Sora cheered from the small crowd that had gathered around. I grumbled, straightening out the bandanna on my head while drawing my swords. Unlike the gentlemen in front of me I could only do well with two swords instead of three, my jaw wasn't strong enough to keep hold on the handle. Believe me, I've tried a few times. I twisted my torso back and forth to make sure I could move with ease in this binder while my opponent just patiently waited for Aaron to call start.

I got into my usual fighting position and started to wait as well. Sure, my stance seemed a bit feminine which caused a few raised eyebrows from the other pirates, but I didn't really care. The only thing to really get on my nerves were the small bets that were starting up, it was the only reason the match hadn't started right away. Aaron had to make sure all the bets were placed. Who knew that such a sweet old man such as this island's leader could make such a greedy son.

"Alright, are you both ready?" Aaron soon asked, standing between the both of us, but was slowly starting to take steps back. Didn't want to get caught in the crossfire.

"We've been ready for a while, are you ready?" I grumbled, earning a slight glare before that smile returned to the brunet's face.

"Okay, well let's not waste any more precious daylight. Start!" he exclaimed, having raised his arm and brought it down to substitute for a flag. Zoro was quick to draw his swords as neither one of us seemed to waste a second as we rushed at each other and let our swords clashed with one another. I grunted at the resistance he put up to break the connections our swords had. When we did jump away from one another we took steady steps, circling each other in search for an opening. 'He's still has the same movement pattern, but also it seems a bit different' I thought, narrowing my eyes as I watched his body movement.

The minute I thought I saw an opening I lunged forward, though it seems that I wasn't the only one that saw an opening as he rushed forward as well. That's how the pass hour seemed to go, the both of us accumulating small wounds from lucky strikes yet keeping to the defense. Well, I kept to the defense. Just looking at him I couldn't help but let my gaze soften as I looked at my childhood friend, memories starting to flood my mind as I didn't realize I was starting to put my guard down. By the time I did realize it, it seemed to be too late.

"Skylar!" it took me a while to process the scream as well as the immense amount of pain that seemed to spread across my chest. My knees felt weak as I dropped my swords and collapsed onto my knees, grasping at my chest, confused by the sudden pain. Drawing my hands back I looked at the blood that stained them…a laugh escaped pass my lips as the pain started to dull just as quickly as it had come. I watched as Sora slid to a stop and dropped onto his knees while the silence that had settled among the crowd by the action that had occurred so quickly earlier. Was interrupted by half the crowd bursting in a loud cheer, well I know who they bet on.

"Skylar, are you alright? You're bleeding!" Sora exclaimed as he grabbed at my face, staring at the fresh 'x' that was cut onto my torso.

"Of course, I'm bleeding because I just got cut, though I suspect it's not that serious" I mumbled, the cut had felt more like a cat scratch. Starts out hurting immensely before dulling down to a throb. My ears perked up as I heard shouting from the directions of the pirates, looking towards them I watched as the orange haired woman seemed to be chewing Zoro out for something. "Help me stand up" I said looking to Sora who nodded his head and threw one of my arms over his shoulder. Once I was back on my own two feet I shouted towards the group of pirates while waving one of my arms.

"Hey! Congratulations for winning, really, I had fun! Now if you excuse me I must go pay the good village doctor a visit!" I called out to the group the minute I had their attention. Sora rolled his eyes and laughed as we started to walk back into the village. "I know, I know. We're going, no need to tell us" I said as we were passing Cloud and I noticed him opening his mouth, about to speak. He closed it and just nodded his head.

-Later-

"Dr. Anderson, guess who came to visit you" Sora and I sang out as we entered the small doctor's office. The main area was small with a sink, medical equipment, and two beds that had a curtain separating them to give the two patients privacy. There was a backroom as well that held extra clothing and medical equipment.

"Well there's our little loser" Dr. Anderson said, exiting the backroom bringing with him a shirt and chest binder.

"Wow, news spreads fast" I commented as Sora helped me sit down on one of the beds while plopping himself down on the other one, taking my swords when I handed them over to him.

"Well it is a small village, dear. Anything gossip worthy is bound to spread like wildfire the minute it happens" the doctor said, grabbing his chair and sitting it down close to the bed. Gathering up what he needed. "Now you know the drill, remove your shirt and, what I also presume to be, your destroyed chest binder so we can look at the damage."

"Yeah, I know" I waved my hand while not wasting another minute and removing the two items. Not the least bit uncomfortable with being this exposed as I trusted the old man and I knew that my twin wasn't the least bit interested in the female body. "It's not that bad, I doubt you'll have to stitch it up."

"I'll be the judge of that" Dr. Anderson said as he started to examine the wound. "Well indeed you're right about it not needing stitches but that doesn't mean it won't scar, then again what cut doesn't scar over?" he questioned as he pushed me back and started to get to work on cleaning it. "Still, any wound whether made by a clean blade or not needs to be cleaned to avoid infection" he mumbled to himself.

"So, what exactly happened?" Sora suddenly asked, breaking the silence that had settled around the room.

"I got distracted" I mumbled, my cheeks flaring up into a small embarrassed blush.

"That's new" Sora said, tilting his head to the side as he looked down at his swinging feet. "Was it because…" he trailed off, but I knew what he was trying to ask.

"Yeah, that's part of the reason" I sighed.

"Mind filling me in here, this old kook can't read minds you know" Dr. Anderson cut in as he was finishing up cleaning off the dried blood and now pouring cleaning alcohol onto a rag.

"Well…" Sora scratched the back of his head before tilting it backwards and looking up.

"The guy I went up against was Zoro, you know, that guy Sora and I have talked about with you before" I explained, staring up at the ceiling. "Got lost in thought just looking at him that I let my guard down, stupid thing to do on my part I'll admit" I said.

"Indeed, and yes I do recall you mentioning this Zoro fellow. But, neither of you ever fully explaining how you fully met him, would you like to elaborate on that for me while you're here?" the doctor asked, pressing the soaking rag against the top of one of the lines that ran across my torso, earning a hiss from me.

"Sure, we got time" I said, shrugging my shoulders. "Let's see, it started back when we were eight…"
