Chapter One

Mira and I were awkwardly sleeping, let's face it no matter how long you sleep in a metal crate, it's never comfortable. I had just started to doze off when the door to the dank, bland room we were holed up in opened. It was another lab assistant. They came in constantly to check on our vitals and such. Silently watching I waited for them to leave; I was fiercely protective of Mira. I remember the time I broke a male scientist's arm when he accidently made her yelp. They, meaning the head crazy scientists decided then that, it might be a good idea to house her with me; their theory was that having her next to me would calm me down. Well it did, but it wasn't like I was going to thank them. She was my biological sister; her DNA had been combined with feline DNA, thus while we had similar looks, we were also noticeably different. Mira has ears like a cat, a tail, sharper night vision, a more flexible bone structure, advanced hearing, small fangs, and wider eyes. I had wings, my DNA had been combined with avian DNA, I too have sharper senses. Our hair is a light strawberry, orange, red color, our eyes were almost the same color, hers were brown mine gold, same jaw shape, we are both fair skinned almost alabaster, same small nose, and the same pink lips. I guess they had what they wanted because they left, I relaxed.

Three days ago Mira had overheard two whitecoats chatting excitedly about getting new equipment, new cages, new windows, the whole shabang. It was then that I saw our wonderful opportunity to escape. Lately I've been experimenting with some of my powers and have come to find I can disappear, as well as make other things disappear. So the plan was when they came in the next morning I would erase Mira and I. When they would come into the room to check on us, and saw we were 'gone' they would race over check the door's lock, and we would break out. Easy peasy! Looking around the room my eye's landed on the metal hourglass I used to tell time. Apparently the scientists decided mutant children wouldn't care about time, therefore there was no clock in here. Squinting I focused on it more, the bottom was almost half full, time to vanish. I lightly tapped Mira awake signaling to her it was time, she nodded her curls bobbing everywhere. Closing my eyes I focused my entire mind on becoming invisible, then I focused specifically on my hands, and I tapped Mira. Opening my eyes I looked at the spot where she used to be and smiled, she was gone. I then looked down at where my hands should be only to see that they were too, gone. Time to put plan Break-Out-Of-Sad-Boring-Inhumane-Creepy-Painful-Laboratory into action…
