Silent Memory

A one-shot in which Draco and Ginny say goodbye by the lake.

'They would have gotten married if the world were different, if they were different.'

It hurt to feel her fingers tracing my face, to look deep into her amber eyes. It hurt after wanting it for so long; it hurt that I didn't have the power, or even the will power, to say no. I wanted to say things to her; beautiful things to remind her of me forever, a lasting stanza - one final word. Nothing came to mind and when I caught my own reflection in the gently rippled waves of the Hogwarts lake, I remembered one thing she had always told me:

'Pictures capture one thousand more words than you can ever say.'

Stroking her hair, it felt like threads of the finest silk slipping freely through my fingers. For the final time, I touched her face, running my calloused thumb across her smooth, porcelain skin; her beautiful features, though crumbling with hurt and loss, imprinted on my mind - such a wonder.

''Through the mist, I hear your voice, I feel your kiss.'

It felt to her like a black hole, something, somewhere in the cosmos had collapsed; the world was folding in on itself and she was the epicentre. Though her fingers pulsated heat, she could feel her hands cooling against his, while his fingers entwined with hers and he gave her one of those gentle, reassuring squeezes.

'If you are a cast in a different mould to the majority, it is no merit of yours: Nature did it.'

Running a finger along his chiselled jaw, she allowed one moment to remember his cool skin against hers, his soft, silky voice whispering sweet sentiments around the lake as they embraced for one final time; and as she followed his gaze, their eyes met and amber sought grey for a silent solace - both glazed with tears.

'They would have gotten married if the world were different, if they were different.'
