Lelouch

Lelouch vi Britannia knew that at some point in time, he's going to pay for all his sins. But when he started the rebellion, he never really paid close attention to the question –how. In fact, he didn't pretty much entertain the thought.

How was he supposed to end the rebellion he started?

He faced each day with one goal in mind –to crush Britannia to pieces and give his sister a place where she can be accepted. He planned ways to reach that goal. And every time he felt weak, the only thing that kept him moving forward was the depiction of the peaceful world that he has set in his mind where everyone is free, and no one is oppressing another. Whenever he lost track of his plans, he always tried his best to remember that place.

A place where children can just play and not worry if an impending bullet is going to cross their playground.

A place where people can fall in love without worrying about the other's racial belonging.

A place where women can have equal opportunities as men.

A place where men will only have to worry about how they're supposed to fill the plates of their families, and not if their wives or children have been agonizingly abused.

No.

All these were just fragments of what composed the world that he had always wanted.

In truth, whenever he tried to imagine the world he wished to create, the only thing that came into his mind was the picture of the three smiling little children sitting inside an abandoned hut in the mountains.

Lelouch owned such simple goals.

And despite the complexities of all his means, he was a person who had the simplest desire in life.

Happiness.

He wanted to create a world where people can feel genuine happiness. Truly and freely.

Lelouch only wanted to feel happiness. It's not a complicated wish at all. But perhaps, people like him will always get rubbed off their desires, no matter how simple they were. And maybe, the reason why this will always happen was because he owned such simple wish.

In the kind of world Lelouch vi Britannia wanted to make, he never, even once, thought of his place. And it was because of the fact that deep inside him, he knew that he wasn't going to belong there.

Four days before his death, Lelouch sat on the edge of his bed.

At that moment, he wasn't Zero, and thus, he didn't feel the weight of his mask.

At that moment, he wasn't Lelouch vi Britannia, the 99th Emperor of the Britannian Empire, and thus, he didn't feel the heavy discomfort of his emperor clothing.

At that moment, he wasn't Lelouch Lamperouge, and thus, he didn't feel in his mouth the bile taste of all his lies.

At that moment, he was just Lelouch. Not the ex-prince who was thrown in Area 11. Not a rebellion leader. Not an evil person who sacrificed many lives, even those of whom he loved, just to get what he wanted.

And he was surprised at how light it felt.

To not carry such a heavy burden on his shoulders.

To be just Lelouch.

And not anybody else.
