At small girl with ginger hair stood in the outer space themed hallway of the Children's Ward in Chesterfield hospital. Across from her was a bright red door with the room number 413 on it. She was about to reach for the round, grey handle when the door opened from the inside and she found herself come face to face with an albino teenager in a red sweater.
"Oh my I am so very sorry," the boy said quickly. "I understand that this must be very triggering for you as I could have injured you by opening the door that fast. I did not consider the possibility that the door could swing out into the hallway a possibly hit someone who was about to come in. The triggers that can be identified here are #-"
"Nice to see you too Kane. Now shut up." The girl said.
"Ah yes nice to see you too. Are you sure you okay? I can understand that you may be triggered by this and-"
"I said shut up, god! How does he even cope with you?! How is he anyway?"
"Well his condition hasn't changed which is neither good or bad. He can talk and move slightly but not much. He is also exhausted easily but that is just part of the Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia or A.L.L. He seems to be sleeping now but that doesn't- mmmn dug hm wumfg" The girl had clapped her hand over Kane's mouth.
"All I wanted was a simple 'Yes he's fine' or 'No he's not well' or something. Not a lecture." she stated. Removing her hand from his mouth Kane replied.
"Sorry. I must go now anyway. My father wanted me home by 6 o' clock and it is now 6:12 so I must be going. See you later." He hurried off down the hall, waving goodbye.
"Bye Kane!" The girl yelled after him. Looking at the bright red door again, she grabbed the grey handle and pushed the door open.
"Hey Karlywurly." she said quietly as she walked in. Across from her was a bed which contained a frail looking, thirteen year old boy. He looked dead but his chest rose and fell, the monitor still showing his heart beating. His white blonde hair was a mess and he had a pained expression on his shallow face. The girl walked over to a chair and as she sat down the boy woke up. He coughed and tried to sit up but failed.
"Oh you're awake!" The girl exclaimed. She jumped up and her red rimmed glasses fell down her face.
"I've been awake ever since Kane left. I was just pretending to be asleep-" He coughed again. "In case you were a doctor. I hate them." Kane was the boy's older brother who was also a friend of the girl's older sister. He talked way to much.
The girl fixed her glasses.
"You say that every time I come to visit you Karl."
"Yeah well do you have a problem with that?"
"Whatever. How are you anyway?"
Karl coughed and looked at her with red eyes. "Not good. It's just so painful all the time. When the doctors come in they shove these horrible needles into my arm then leave. I gave up eating a while ago too. It hurts even to swallow. Now they just pump neutrinos into me." He looked away and coughed. "Anyway how have you been Teri? How are the others?"
Teri sighed. She wanted to tell him everything was fine but it wasn't. She wanted to tell him that everyone in their group of friends were behaving normal like he told them to when in reality everyone had sunk into depression. Even Eric had which was weird since they didn't get along well.
"Well... Um..." Teri couldn't think of anything to say that wouldn't upset him.
"How's Nena?" Karl prompted.
Nena. Poor poor Nena. She had a crush on Karl and was distraught because he was in hospital. She used to be a happy girl who got along with everyone. Now she barely talked to anyone.
"Oh she's fine." Teri lied. She hated doing this but she didn't want to stress Karl. He rested his head against the pillow and smiled. "That's good," He coughed. "I was worried that she might have gone into depression or something. I'm glad everyone is alright." Teri was silent because this was obviously not true. Suddenly she remembered something very important she needed to tell him.
"Karl I just remembered something!" Teri yelled.
Karl winced. "Ow ow ow. Please don't yell Teri."
"Oops sorry."
"What is it anyway?"
"I nearly have enough money for you to go to Japan! I'm holding an art competition a few months from now, where you pay to enter or can buy some art! Isn't that great? You'll finally achieve your lifelong dream!"
When Karl had first been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia cancer, Teri had started to save money so he and her could go to Japan. Over the months of him being in hospital she had organised many events to get the money. She was only a little away from her goal, which the art competition could help her achieve.
Teri stared at Karl, a massive grin on her face, her eyes like windows that showed a bright blue sky. Karl stared back her but his eyes were full of sadness and despair.
"Teri listen. I honestly don't think I'm going to live that long. And I've told you, you don't have to do this. Especially for me."
"But I do Karl. This has been your dream. Your one and only goal in life. And I'm going to help you achieve it. Because I'm your friend." Karl gave a weak smile then started to cough. This time he kept coughing until a little blood splurged out of his mouth and onto his hand. Teri looked alarmed and started to fret but Karl just waved her off.
"It's nothing. Happens all the time. Don't worry about it."
"Okay as long as it's not something serious."
Karl shrugged and nuzzled back into his bed. "If I die and you raise enough money you can take my ashes to Japan with you and spread them on Yonaha Maehama Beach or something."
"Karl you're not going to die. Well not from blood cancer anyway."
Karl just laid in his bed bed quietly, trying to catch his breath. Talking seemed to exhaust him so much.
"T-Teri?" His voice was barely a whisper and Teri had to get up from her chair to hear him.
"Yeah Karl?"
"I'm going to go to sleep for a while. You can leave if you want."
"No I'll stay."
"Thanks." Karl closed his eyes and went to sleep for real. Teri had secretly had a crush on him for a long time. Even longer than Nena. Just watching him sleep peacefully made her heart leap. Like this, it didn't seem that he was suffering from blood cancer. He just looked like regular, shouty, grumpy Karl.
Suddenly his red eyes snapped open and he sat up clutching his chest.
"Karl!" Teri ran forward.
"D-damn. Go get a d-doctor." Karl fell back heavily. The machines next to him started to beep.
"Right!" Teri dashed out the room, running as fast as she could. She frantically hoped that he'd be alright, that he'd be safe but deep down all she felt was despair.
Teri returned with a doctor. The machines next to Karl were still beeping like crazy. "Is he going to be okay?" Teri asked worriedly as the doctor checked the monsters and Karl's scrunched up form. He just bit his lip, scribbled something down on his notepad and hurried out the room.
"Karl!" Teri ran over to him and grabbed his pale, boney hand. "You're going to be fine, just fine! I promise I won't let you go!" She started to cry, sobs racking her entire body.
"Teri listen," She leaned in closer as she could barely hear Karl. "Not matter what happens you need to keep moving forward. Promise that you'll do that. Promise me."
"I promise Karl. I promise you that I'll keep moving forward not matter what!" Tears dripped down off her cheeks onto their clasped hands. Karl gave her hand a little squeeze then it dropped to his side. "Teri can I ask you something?" he whispered.
"S-sure anything you want." More tears dripped onto the clean white sheets of Karl's bed.
"Do you r-really love me?" Teri stared at him, a shocked expression on her face. She then sank to her knees at the side of the bed, her head resting on Karl's leg.
"Yes. I love you. I-I've always loved you."
Karl smiled. "That's good to know. I love you too." This just made Teri cry even harder as she threw her arms around him, holding him in a gentle embrace.
"The feelings been there... I just didn't know what to do about it... Sorry that I only told you now. I wish that I could of-" He coughed lightly.
"It's okay Karl. You don't need to apologise." She looked up and kissed his pale, cold cheek.
"Thank you... Teri... For always being there..." He relaxed more in her arms.
"Shhhhhhh. Just sleep now. Just sleep." Teri stroked his hair whilst shooshing him. Karl closed his eyes and began to snore a little in her arms. He drew a long breath but no exhale followed and he relaxed completely. Teri broke down in tears but makes no sound as Karl's heart did one final beat then slowly came to a halt.
Two months later
Karl had died with Teri still attached to him. The funeral was a few days later in which all his closest friends came to. Jose, Ross, Davy, Jack, Aria, Tory, Scot, Nena, Kara, Vira, Eren, Gary, Eric and Feli all turned up and payed their respects whilst his coffin was incinerated. During the funeral, Nena had thrown herself across Karl's coffin, crying for him. She refused to get off and her mother and her sister had to drag her off it. Literally. Karl's best friend, Gary, was comforted by his friend Tory and Scot was comforted by Aria who was his girlfriend. Kane just stood there, silent with tears rolling down his cheeks. Next to him was Teri's sister Lara and Scot's older brother, Mike. Mike was also Lara's boyfriend.
Now Teri didn't know what to do with her life. Her one and only love was gone and so was her happiness. Lara had been trying to help her through her depression by forcing her to go to the skatepark and talk to Scot, who was also extremely shaken by Karl's death. At least he didn't see him die right in front of him like Teri did. It would've probably broke him.
"Teri? TERI?! Earth to Teri Pyrite?! ARE YOU EVEN LISTENING TO ME?!" A loud voice brought her back to reality. Her best friend Davy Straker had come round to discuss what to do about the art competition that was coming up. After the whole karl-dying thing, Teri had forgot to cancel the art competition. She had called Davy round so they could work out how to cancel it but apparently he still wanted to host it. Even though Karl was dead, Davy thought they'd still get a good turnout because people would want to honour his memory or some rubbish like that.
"Huh? What? Oh yeah I'm listening." Davy looked at her, disbelief showing on his face. At least that's what Teri imagined what would be showing there. Davy was a 'cool kid' so he wore shades 24/7 and kept a poker face all the time. It was quite annoying at times.
"So what do you want to do about the competition? We only have three days" Davy asked.
"Cancel it. It's no fun anymore if he's... Gone." Teri brought her knees up to her chest to try and hide the tears that were forming in her eyes. God she missed him so much.
Davy sighed and put his hand on her shoulder.
"Look how long are you going to be depressed. Because it's kind of pissing me off."
Teri just mumbled "I dunno. Forever?"
"You can't stay depressed forever."
"I can if I want to."
"No you can't. Karl wouldn't want you to be depressed like this would he?" Oh did not just play that card. Teri gritted her teeth.
"Don't you dare say anything like that. You hate him and are always mean to him."
"Teri stop talking like he's still alive. You need to accept that he's not and start moving forward."
"Teri listen. No matter what happens you need to keep moving forward. Promise that you'll do that. Promise me."
Davy spoke again. "If we host this art competition, you'll have enough money to go to Japan with your sister. You can take his ashes to Japan with you and spread them on Yonaha Maehama Beach or something."
"If I die and you raise enough money you can take my ashes to Japan with you and spread them on Yonaha Maehama Beach or something."
Teri jerked her head up, causing Davy to fling his arm back up in surprise.
"You're right Davy! I have to move forward for Karl. It is what he would have wanted! I must take his ashes to Japan and spread them there. It was his lifelong dream to go there after all!"
"Woah what happened to depressed Teri all of a sudden? Did she die and her body has been taken over by a spirit of optimism or something?"
Teri playfully slapped him. "No. I just want to honour Karl. That's all."
"Riiiiiiiight. I'll go ring my bro to tell him it's still on then. Be right back." Davy got up from where he had been sat on the floor and exited Teri's room. Teri lifted her face to the ceiling.
Don't worry Karl, she silently said , You will go to Japan and your ashes will be spread on Yonaha Maehama Beach. I made a promise remember?
"Yo Teri? Bro says we have to go back to my place. You coming?" Davy poked his head round the doorway. Teri smiled for the first time in months.
"Yeah sure." She said getting up and taking Davy's hand.
See Karl? I'm moving forward. Just like I promised.
