I kept thinking to myself, why did I sign up for this?

Because I didn't really have a choice, I answered myself. Idiot. Still.

A rough camp, a small cramped room with two companions on either side of me. Their names were Iori and Krizalid. I doubt it matters. Either way, I really don't know how we were supposed to handle it.

I wasn't not a weakling, but the way we got treated there was absolutely ghastly. Just the first day and we had run ten rounds of the field. And it was a big one. Then there were other things. fifty push-ups, fifty sit-ups. I didn't know if I'd make it past week one.

All the others were muscled freaks, and I seemed to stand out. Because I kept getting into trouble.

At dinner, I was looking around, and someone caught my eye. I guess she was pretty, because I couldn't take my eyes off her. In fact, I forgot to eat my dinner. And she noticed. She called me over. When I got closer, I remembered who I was dealing with.

She was sixteen. Her name was Sarah, but everyone called her Whip. I figured it must have something to do with the whip at her waist. She didn't seem very happy with me, and to my dismay, I also noticed that she was a captain. Drat.

"You've offended me," she said. "And not offending people is an important thing. Drop and do a hundred push-ups."

Before I could help it, the words escaped my mouth. "I'd like to see you do it, then."

The end-of-dinner bell rang.

She did. Before I could say anything, she told me, "Since I'm just a girl, and you've insulted me again, I'm sure you can do a hundred more, and make them commando push-ups. Report to me tomorrow morning, at the parade square. And tell me how many you've done. And don't even think about lying."

Damn.

I opened my mouth to reply, but remembered what had happened when I'd done so. I shut it hurriedly.

"Wise decision," she advised. "Dismissed."

Groaning in dismay, I went back to my seat, feeling as if a heavy load had been placed on my shoulders. Day one, and already I've been punished. Great way to start, Kyo. Great way to start.

The other two were sympathetic that I'd been punished, but they didn't seem to mind. I guess they didn't care. After all, it wasn't them being punished. It was me.

So, I trudged back to my room, hungry, tired and disappointed. Way to go.
