Narcissa held her hand to her mouth. "Are you sure?"
The doctor nodded solemnly. "Your son has no magical core."
She blindly found the chair and sat down with a thump; all of her usual grace was nowhere to be seen. "How can this be? Both Lucius and I are strong magically. How can Draco be a – a..." she trailed off, not able to even speak the horrible truth.
Draco hadn't yet showed signs of magic. There had been no accidental magic, no anything proving that Draco was a normal boy. When she had brought him to the doctor, though, she never thought she'd be told that her son was a squib. It was unheard of. A boy of both Black and Malfoy blood. How could this happen to her son. It just wasn't fair.
A sense of loss filled her, and she knew it would be worse for Draco when he realized that he was different from his parents, from the people his parents associated with. Draco would always stand out in the magical world; he'd always be an outcast now. There was no potion, no magic, which could give Draco what was rightfully his.
Her thoughts turned to Lucius. She knew he would react horribly; he may even react violently.
"I'm extremely sorry for your loss, Mrs. Malfoy."
She waved the doctor away. He was talking as if Draco was dead, and a chill ran through her body. Lucius would be angry, be disgusted, but would it be bad enough for him to get rid of his only son?
Many Pure-blood families disowned squibs. Some squibs even disappeared and were thought to be dead. Her own family disowned squibs, and she knew the Malfoys were just as strict. Lucius loved Draco, though, and she didn't want to think he'd follow the example of their families.
Even if she didn't want to believe it, she knew there was a very real possibility that he might, and she needed to decide what to do. She knew she had to protect Draco from Lucius's anger no matter what. No one was more important than her son, not even her husband.
As she stared at her innocent son, she knew she would show the world that her cousin wasn't the only Black that was brave. Even if she had to take Draco and run, she would protect him. She'd protect him from the Dark Lord's followers, from the wizarding world, and from her husband.
As long as she lived, no one would harm him.
