"I have to do everything around here," Sokka grumbled as he marched back into camp with a handful of assorted nuts he had discovered. "But that's why I'm the leader."
He looked over at Toph who was leaning against a wall of rocks, and she shook her head at him. He stuck his tongue out at her, and was very lucky she couldn't see it. Sokka twisted his head to locate the other two members of their group, and only found his sister, humming as she pitched a tent.
"There's something different about Katara," Sokka said, as he rubbed his chin thoughtfully. Momo jumped on his shoulder and began eating the nuts from his hand. "But I just can't place it."
After what seemed like longer than it should have taken him, he got it.
"Aha! She has a band of fresh flowers around her head! And not just any flower, the rare and elusive Red Tiger Lily!" Sokka raised his finger in success, and Momo squeaked through a mouthful of nuts.
"But Katara doesn't know where to find the Red Tiger Lily, or how to make a flower chain," Sokka put his hands behind his back just after Momo finished off the nuts, and began to pace. Somewhere behind him, Toph let out an exasperated sigh.
"So the only conclusion can be... She's seeing someone!" He stopped pacing, causing Momo to fall backwards from his shoulder. "But.. Who? We move camp every night, and there's no way someone could have been following us this whole time."
Sokka put his hands on his hips and looked at how happy his sister seemed.
"Well it wasn't me, it wasn't Toph, and she didn't make the flower chain herself. That leaves..." He looked down at the ground.
"Momo, did you make it?" Momo spat out a mouthful of nuts in response.
"Then.." It took a few minutes before things clicked in Sokka's brain. "Aang! That two-faced, lying, cheating Airbender! I'm gonna-"
This was when Toph decided it was the right time to Earthbend, and smack Sokka over the head with a large rock. He fell to the ground with a crash, completely forgetting his previous anger.
"Hey! What was that for?" He rubbed his head and stood up.
"I thought you were dropped on your head as a baby, so I was trying to reverse the damage," Toph shrugged.
Sokka opened his mouth to reply, but was stopped by the sound of his sister laughing. He turned to see Katara sitting on a tree stump, and Aang showing her something in his hand. Sokka frowned.
"Well I can't be mad if she's happy!" He stomped his foot.
"Idiot," Toph muttered.
Sokka didn't make a snide come back to Toph, but instead looked at the scene before him. A part of him felt good that he didn't have to tell Aang to protect her, because Sokka knew he would.
He stood in silence and watched his sister - the one he'd promised his father he'd protect - fall in love with the Avatar.
