That's What Girls Do

Chapter 1

Erin O'Ryan pulled her backpack strap over her shoulder, in a hurry to get to the parking lot before the crowd. If there was one thing she hated about the last day of school, it was the crowd to get out of the door. It was an early release, and even though the bell hadn't rung, the halls were already crammed with people talking loudly and the slamming of lockers.
She slipped, and felt the smell of cleaning fluid as she landed on the recently mopped floor. She sighed, pushing herself up.
"Great," she muttered. "As if this day wasn't bad enough." Tonight she had an interview with the manager of the new radio station, in hopes of getting a summer job. She was a nervous wreck, and now she smelled of ammonia. Definitely not impressing.
She slammed the door of her red Corvette closed, and floored the gas. She had to get home and change. There wasn't time for a good shower, but if she hurried, at least her clothes wouldn't smell.
She put on the turn signal, stopping at the nearest gas station to fill up so she wouldn't have to later. She grabbed her purse, ringing the bell for service. If they wanted a tip from her, they had better hurry. Her patience was already running low.

"Could you get that one?" Steve asked, looking up from under the hood of the car.
"Sure." Soda yawned, walking outside. It was a warm day, the first of summer. He blinked as he got a good glance at the girl behind the wheel. She was a fiesty looking soc, a brunette. She was peering anxiously at him over the rim of her sunglasses, and he noticed her eyes were a startling green, like they weren't really eyes, but more emeralds.
"Excuse me?" She asked, inturrupting his thoughts. "How much do I owe you?"
"Huh?" He jumped, and stared at her a moment, before slowly saying, "Nothing. It's on me."
She smiled, making her look even prettier. "You know," she grinned. "you're kinda cute. What's your name?"
"Sodapop Curtis." He said, glad that Steve had told him to take care of her. She was right cute, almost as cute as Sandy. He shook his head as the last thought entered his mind. He didn't want to think about Sandy. Not yet.
"No kidding?" She pulled off her sunglasses and ran a hand through her hair. "I like it."
"I have a brother named Ponyboy." He smiled, thinking of his kid brother.
"Really?" She seemed truely interested, not like most girls he knew. "I would love to talk more, but I have a job interview. Maybe I'll catch you later?"
"Yeah, sure." He turned and headed back to the garage and stopped suddenly. "Hey, what's your name?"
She turned and looked at him, before turning and calling, "Erin!"
"Erin..." He repeated softly to himself.

A/N: It'll get better, promise!
