Regulus stared ahead silently. Although the party went on around him, he ignored it. It would never offer him satisfaction or excitement. Not anymore when his hands would forever be dirty.
He sighed and looked around at the happy faces. 'Was I ever that carefree?' he morosely thought. He had to get away, a least for a little while. He stood up and walked towards the door, grabbing his cloak along the way, but before he could make it outside, Sirius stopped him. "Where are you going?"
"I just need some air," he muttered, trying to pull his arm free.
Sirius dropped his arm, but he followed Regulus outside. "What's wrong? This celebration is for you. For us. I have my brother back, and I want to enjoy it. Why is it that you want to get far away from it? Do you already regret turning away from that maniac?"
"No," Regulus growled harshly. "I'll never regret saying no to him. I'm just glad I made it out of there with my life."
"Then why are you pushing me away."
"I'm not," Regulus argued.
There was silence but no retreating footsteps.
"Sirius, please, just leave me alone."
"I can't. You're my brother, and when you came to my house, looking so frightened, I promised myself that I would never turn my back on you again."
"Regulus! Sirius! Are you coming back to the party anytime soon?"
"Go away, Prongs," Sirius loudly ordered.
There were no other shouts for them to come in and join the fun, indicating James had listened.
"Regulus, talk to me. Trust me. If I don't know what's wrong, I can't help you. Let me help you."
Regulus wrapped his arms around his body underneath his cloak. "Siri," he croaked, using his childhood nickname for his older brother, "I messed up so badly."
Sirius wrapped his arms around Regulus and held him securely. "Whatever happened... we can fix it. You need to tell me what happened, though. Trust me," he encouraged, kissing Regulus gently on the forehead.
"I killed someone. I didn't mean to. I promise it was an accident. I think he knew I was beginning to waver, and he planned it as a way to make sure I stayed loyal. I don't think he expected it to backfire. I never felt this horrible before, Sirius. What do I do?" Regulus asked, clutching Sirius's t-shirt in his hands as his shoulders shook with the force of his sobs.
Sirius mindlessly patted his back and as the party moved from the house to the outdoors, everyone but the Marauders ignoring the two brothers, Sirius whispered, "We'll figure it out. Don't worry. I'm here for you, and I'm not going anywhere."
