I was hiding in my house. Wimping out? No, I was trying to make a statement to Tetra. She always expected me to have all my time free to do some crazy job for her, so I was going to show her that I had other things on my mind. I took the letter I had written beforehand and read it over. It was a heartfelt greeting to my family on Outset Island, wishing the best to Grandma and Aryll, and telling embarrassing stories all about Tetra. It ended with my sincere goodbye and signature. That would get her mad for sure! I set it on the table next to me.
As I heard footsteps outside my door, I folded the letter. It was halfway into the envelope when Tetra burst in. I pretended to stop dead in my tracks. "Oh, uh, hi, Tetra!" I said, hopefully sounding fake-cheerful. I shoved the letter behind my back.
As I expected, she walked around behind me and took the letter from my hand. "What's this?" she asked.
I tried to take it back from her, yelling, "Don't read that, it's personal!"
Instead, she held it above her head and read it aloud. "My loving friends on Outset Island- Tetra and I are well into our journey. We are creating a new kingdom, and I hope you can all visit us someday. Grandma, I'm sorry about Aryll, but I'm sure she'll recover. Aryll, keep your head up-being sick must be tough, but remember, I'm rooting for you. As for my favorite little island dude, I have two pieces of advice-stay out of trouble, and wipe your nose. To everyone else, you get hugs in a letter. Stay safe-I want you all to be around to see New Hyrule. -Link. P.S. Grandma, don't let Aryll hear this part. Keep her happy. Not many people survive this disease, as you know, but she needs to enjoy her young and innocent life while it's around." Her voice trailed off as she lowered the letter. "Link, I'm sorry. I didn't know about your sister."
Uh, what? "No, it's all right. It isn't too bad yet-she could be cured. It's just a matter of Rupees at this point, which nobody has." I had mixed up my fake letter with my actual letter home! "You don't need to concern yourself with my family."
She stepped closer to me. "You are the only family I have now. The pirates... well, they're idiots. So your family is my family. I'm sorry for stressing you out these past few months." She stared at the floor. This had to be a joke-Tetra was being sympathetic towards ME? This was so unlike her. I only nodded and smiled a little. She gave my letter back, then took another step to close the space between us. Her lips landed softly on mine, then left just as quickly. "I'm only rough on the edges," she said, smiling a little. Then she stepped back, whirled on her heel, and left.
