Opal watched from the corner of her eye as the older girl moved around the room. Those fluid movements, that striking pose, her long braid whipping around her head. Everything about Kuvira was perfection, and a far cry from whatever she was trying to do.
She looked down at herself, her small feet peeking from beneath too-long pants, and her pudgy mid-section before she took a deep breath. Kuvira had started out just like she did, once upon a time, and her mother had said, she would eventually be as good if she kept at it.
She waited for the right moment in the music, before she began. She lunged, she spun and turned, just like Kuvira had done. She was grace, beauty, lighter than air, but right at the crucial moment, the big jump into the Lotus Position, she fell.
The sound stopped the rehearsal, drawing everyone's attention to her blunder. Tears came to Opal's eyes. She wasn't cut out for this dancing thing, and this would just be another thing Kuvira and her mom shared that she couldn't do.
But then two feet appeared before her. Opal looked up into the teenager's face, before quickly swiping at her eyes. But Kuvira shook her head. She reached out and pulled the smaller girl to her feet, using the end of her shirt to wipe at Opal's face.
"That was really good, but you're jumping without really looking, and putting too much into it. You have to be lighter to get into the Lotus Position," Kuvira said, taking her hands and standing behind her.
Opal smiled as Kuvira guided her through the motions. Maybe, she could do this.
