You make me dance like a fool

Forget how to breathe

Shine like gold, buzz like a bee

Just the thought of you can drive me wild

Oh, you make me smile.

N.E.W.T.s were the hardest challenge that Lily Evans had ever encountered. Even her perfected work ethic had met its match with some of the hardest concepts of magic that she'd ever been exposed to, and there were still a few months until the exams. All the classes that she was taking in hopes of becoming an auror, on top of her duties as Head Girl, made for long nights of her nose stuck in a multitude of books, often at the same time.

Once her legs had started to fall asleep from lack of use, Lily picked up her transfiguration textbook and started pacing while studying the theory of becoming an animagus. "Transfiguring oneself into an animagi is an extreme piece of magic, so extreme that use must be monitored by the Ministry of Magic through animagus registry. If the transformation were to be preformed incorrectly, possible misfortunes include, but are not limited to..." Lily's mouth moved, silently enunciating each word to further imprint them in her memory.

She had developed a rhythm as she moved from one side of the Head's common room to the other. Utterly focused on the text in front of her, she failed to hear the approaching footsteps that belonged to the Head Boy who shared the dorm: James Potter. She was unaware of his presence until he tapped her on the shoulder, startling her. Her textbook fell to the ground and she jumped about a foot in the air.

"Merlin, Potter, you scared me!" Lily stated, exasperated. "Don't do that!"

"Well, I thought you heard me, Evans. I wasn't exactly being the quietest little mouse when I walked through the door," James explained as Lily bent over to retrieve her book.

"Why are you even in here?" Lily questioned. "I would've thought you'd be in Hogsmeade by now. What's the matter? No date?"

"Oh, I assure you there were offers. But I'd prefer to stay here if you aren't going, Evans."

"And why is that?"

"Don't tell me you're so thick to not remember what day it is," James teased. "It's Valentine's Day. And why would I want to spend the day somewhere away from my love?"

"I'm not your love, Potter. I'm far from it."

"You most certainly are, my dear. So would you do me the honor of accepting this rose?" From behind his back, James withdrew a single red rose.

"I wouldn't have pegged you for a hopeless romantic, Potter," Lily commented as she took the rose. "But nonetheless, this is sweet. Thank you." She smiled slightly and raised the flower to her nose to inhale its lovely scent.

"I've got one more question," James said. "Would you like to dance, Lily?"

"I don't see why not," Lily said, surprising James as well as herself. He pulled her into his arms, and they swayed. Suddenly, her favorite song flooded the room and she broke into a smile. "How'd you know?"

"Lily dear, you can't expect me to have, how you so quaintly put it, stalked you and not know your favorite song," James stated while dipping her. She giggled. When she was pulled back up, their movements were more upbeat, and before long they were skipping around the common room. They both were laughing, smiling, and thoroughly enjoying themselves to the extent of not noticing the door to the common room opening.

"Did you think this would ever happen?" Peter asked Remus.

"It was bound to, eventually. They're meant to be," Remus observed. "Good for him."

And with that, the two Marauders slipped out the door, leaving Lily and James to continue their Valentine's dance.

A/N: I know its subpar, but I love the song and felt obligated to write a Valentine's Day story. Your thoughts? (The song is "Smile" by Uncle Kracker)
