Not What It Seems

Maxie Jones was walking past the docks and back to the penthouse after a busy day of work. She could hardly wait until she got home,so she could have a good, long hot soak in the tub and to talk to her best friend. She smiled to herself and reached into her purse to pull out her black and gold compact mirror. Opening it up,she began to fix her hair. Suddenly she noticed two people, reflected in the mirror, kissing. Her eyes widened and her hand fluttered to her chest in shock. It wasn't the fact that people were making out at the docks, that surprised her,it was who those two people were. Damian Spinelli and Nadine Crowell were kissing. Maxie couldn't help but feel hurt and betrayed. Spinelli was her best friend. Why didn't he tell her that he liked someone? Feeling as if her heart was being twisted with a knife and tears in her blue eyes, she rushed to the penthouse without looking back.

When Spinelli got back to the penthouse a half hour later,he was surprised to see Maxie sitting on the couch, crying. "Maximista?" He asked in a soft, worried voice, walking over to the couch.

"Why didn't you tell me that you liked Nadine?" She asked in a strangled whisper. "We are supposed to be best friends,at least I thought we were,so why didn't you tell me about you and Nadine?"

Spinelli ran a hand through his hair, nervously. She had seen the kiss. He sat down beside her slowly. "You saw?" He whispered, staring at the wall infront of him. For some reason he felt guilty, although he couldn't understand why. Sure he was in love with Maxie but it wasn't as if they were a couple, after all she had told him repeatedly that they were the best of friends.

Maxie laughed bitterly through her tears. "Is that all you can say to me? Of course I saw! I wouldn't be sitting here crying otherwise!"

"Why should it bother Maximista who the Jackal kisses? The last time a checked,we weren't a couple." He snapped, jumping up from his spot on the couch in his irritation and heading torwards the stairs. He felt angry. She didn't want a relationship with him and yet she didn't want him with other women?

Maxie felt her cheeks grow hot in embarassment. Why should it bother her so much. They were friends? Shouldn't she just be happy for him? She began to twist her fingers in her lap in her nervouseness. "Well we're best friends, you know? I just thought that, that would be something you told me about." She rambled.

"Perhaps The Jackal didn't tell you anything because there is nothing to tell." He said softly, turning back around to look at his friend.

Maxie's eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "Huh? How can it be nothing? You were kissing her!!" She said standing up with her hands on her hips, glaring at him. How could he lie to her so easily?

Spinelli gave her an uncharacteristic smirk. "Not everything is as it seems Maximista. I was merely helping out a friend." He told her briskly.

Maxie looked up at him. "What? How was kissing Nadine helping her out?" She asked in confusion. That truly made no sense at all!

Spinelli walked closer to her, leading her back to the couch to sit down with him. "Nurse Nadine called me on my cellphone needing the Jackal's expertise. When I met her at the docks, she rambled to me about The Princely One." He finally said, looking at her closely from out of the corner of his eye.

Maxie looked at him. "You mean...Nadine was just trying to make Nikolas jealous? There is nothing going on between the two of you?" She sniffled.

Spinelli smiled shyly, gazing down at his feet. "Of course not. The Jackal doesn't make a habit of kissing random people." He said. "I am going to go take a shower and put on my pajamas." He gave her another smile, before running up the stairs.

Maxie stayed sitting on the couch as she comtemplated her feelings for Spinelli in her head. Why had she been so jealous over the thought of Spinelli being with Nadine?
