Prompt: asleep

She's asleep the first time he tells her he loves her. She'd almost died that day. He's sitting by her side; hand on her, their fingers intertwined. He couldn't let go of her. He'd almost lost her and as he watches her rest, as he looks at her face her face, almost as white as the sheets she's laying on, he can't stop the words from tumbling out. He says it once, twice, again and again, like a chant. The words are a whisper; she can't possibly hear him, but he feels her fingers squeeze his and her eyes flutter and he's clutching her hand tighter, sitting up to kiss her head and sobbing the words over and over again.
