Fate's Shadow

October 31, 1981, The Dark Lord Voldemort was defeated in Potter cottage, the whole family perishing as one. No one knows exactly what happened, but every single wizard with the Dark Mark died agonizing deaths at exactly the same minute, 11:59 pm. There are rumors that the boy survived a killing curse only to be crushed by the collapsing building, but the Auror report of Scene Findings has been sealed to only a select few. Even the Aurors on the scene not selected to retain knowledge of the event were obliviated.

In the only trial held after Voldemort's defeat, Sirius Black, accused of betraying the Potter family was put under veritaserum, and revealed Peter Pettigrew as the secret keeper. As Peter had died a Death Eater, this truth was immediately and widely believed, and Sirius set free.

An election was held, and a Minister with a head for economic prosperity was given a mandate. Celebrations of the Dark Lord's defeat were spread far and wide, and lasted the whole year.

This was the time little Ginny was born into.

She grew up on stories of the Potter family. And she was always asking about the little boy, and crying at his death.

When she turned two, her mother claims she had an imaginary friend named, Harry. Now that she's sixteen, she just takes her mother's word for it. She has no memory of an imaginary friend. She's sure she did have a friend named Harry, though, but he was real.

Something always seems to be missing. She feels like she's always searching for someone who's never there. Dating boys feels wrong, but she does it if only to seem normal.

At twenty, she's diagnosed with an incurable disease, even from a wizard standpoint. She has six months to live, but despite her family's grief, she's not really sad. She'll miss her parents, brothers and friends. But, her death just feels right. Another oddity in her already odd existence.

Further into her illness, she starts seeing Harry. He's older now, but she knows its him, and they talk, but they don't really need to; she just knows him like she knows herself, and he knows her in the same way.

In her last days, she whispers her love to her family. Her voice is almost gone.

The last thing she says to her mother is, "Don't cry for me, mom. I'm going to be alright. I'll be with Harry."

Author's note: This is an earlier work written before the Deathly Hollows. Due to canon this just isn't a possible scenario. Multiple Horcruxes, anyone? But, I felt in the publishing mood, and as the majority of my work will never see the light of day, I thought I'd publish this little ditty. It is one of my shortest scribblings so not much for me to muck up. ;)
