Dancing By Moonlight
knoteach
Vin slipped out of town quietly. If he hadn't told Chris he was going, it was doubtful anyone would realize he was gone.
Slipping off Peso's back, Vin removed the horse's bridle as well, then turned the horse loose. He had ridden bareback to keep this simple. He watched, smiling as the horse frolicked and ran around the meadow. As he watched the horse play, Vin started to sing as he had been taught. It was a wordless song, somewhere between a chant and a croon, but soon Peso picked up the rhythm of his masters song and danced for him in the light of the full moon.
After ten minutes of the dance, Vin was shocked to see another horse join the black in his dance. In his shock, Vin stopped singing, but the melody was picked up by another voice nearby. The language was different, but the meaning and heart of the song was the same.
Vin knew both the horse and the voice that had joined he and Peso, but he had neither seen nor heard them approach. Looking around he finally spotted his companion walking toward him from the cover of the trees.
Walking slowly, still singing in a strong baritone voice, was Ezra.
Vin stared is shock at the man that had come to stand beside him. Ezra was the last person he would have suspected of knowing how to do this. Ezra smiled slightly then nodded toward the horses. Vin forced his gaze to turn to the animals that were still dancing for them.
It was amazing, the two animals danced as if the had worked together their entire lives.
Feeling the wonder of the dance all over again, Vin picked up the song and joined in.
Two voices blended that night in perfect harmony. One in Comanche, and one is Cherokee.
Eventually the song ended, the sound drifting away with the wind. Turning to Ezra, Vin quirked an eyebrow in question.
Ezra shrugged and said, "One of the many places Maude saw fit to leave me was with a cousin that lived in a small town in southern Tennessee. My best friend, and one of the only children of the town that would come anywhere near me, was a Cherokee boy a couple years older than I was. He taught me…" Ezra trailed off as he waved a hand toward the two horses.
Vin nodded, then said, "Comanche taught me. Must'uv been about ten or so at the time never forgot. Never would have guessed about you though," Vin said.
Ezra nodded. "I have been most discreet about when I escape our town for this purpose. I was surprised to find you here, but could not resist joining you."
Silently the two men turned to each other and nodded. It would remain their secret.
