Oh dear, what have I done. Well, this was kind of inspired by the song 'Skyscraper' from Demi Lovato. Yes, I know this might be cheesy or over-used, but honestly, I was just feeling a tad down and decided to write it out. So, enjoy!
The Once-ler let out a small sob as he watched all of the forest animals, Melvin included, leave him. Him, of all people! "Pip," he hiccuped, pulling a marshmallow from his coat pocket and offering it to the Bar-ba-loot. The small animal turned it's head, gazing at the Once-ler with sorrowful eyes before continuing on. He cringed at the Humming-fish, their wheezing becoming more noticeable with the silence of the factory.
The trees had run out. He had become a failure in the end. Just like his mother had said before he embarked on his journey to find the perfect material for his thneeds. He thought back to that time and laughed, a cruel and pitiful chuckle.
He deserved this. Everything that was happening, he deserved it.
The animals leaving him, his mother disowning him. Everything. And that feeling was only intensified when the Lorax waddled up to him, disappointment clear in those green eyes. He should've listened to him. All of those times where Mustache told him to stop cutting trees, he should've listened to the pleas. But he didn't, and this was his punishment.
The Once-ler fought back another sob as the Lorax looked back at him sadly before lifting himself up by the seat of his pants and into a hole in the smog. He stumbled back, realising that in the end, he would always be alone. Alone with his thoughts and destruction he created. Distraught, the Once-ler trudged to the edge of the cliff that his factory sat on and peered down at the remains of the forest. "Unless someone like you cares a whole lot," he mumbled, wiping tears from his eyes, "nothing is going to get better, it's not."
The thoughts raced through his mind, not quite making sense to him. Nothing made sense right now. He could only think about the forest, the animals, and the pollution. He couldn't take it. He would go insane if he had to live here anymore, the stumps of trees and the schlopp as the scenery. He had to end it. He had to end everything. As he stood straight and lifted his head high, the Once-ler thought back to all of the good times he's had. Even meeting Mustache was a good thing, no matter how annoying the Guardian of the Forest became. And when all of the animals overtook his small 'cottage', it was nice.
For once in his miserable life, he had friends. But in the end, everything he has ever loved left him. And with that, he took one last look at the ground far below and jumped.
'Yeah, it's a long way down, but I am closer to the clouds up here.'
Ahah, I'm such a horrible person. Gosh, all of the feels while writing this were overpowering. Anyway, I do take requests, so if you want a story, just ask. I'll try to work my magic to get one out for you. As always, remember to follow me on tumblr for the latest updates and requests! :)
