His eyes opened remembering nothing more than a flash of light with no story to go with it. His memories felt like nothing more than a dream drifting from his grasp with each passing second.
Light danced through the leaves and branches of the tree that he laid beneath, a sight he could not recall having seen in the longest time. Being touched gently by the breeze had Dom lifting his arm. It was not covered in armor, nor was it dirty and scarred from battle. Bringing his hands to his face as he sat himself up the beard he had grown in the past few months was no longer on his face. His feet were bare gently placed on the quilted blanket that he remembered once upon a time.
Where was Marcus? Looking side to side for even a glimpse of his best friend Dom found nothing. He did not hear the roar of explosions, the sound of gunfire in the distance. Instead, he heard the gentle sounds of laughter, innocent and pure dancing on the wind bending the leaves.
Reluctantly Dom would rise to his feet and look around taking a step off of the quilt. The feel of grass beneath his feet almost made the fearless man jump out of his skin. It was a feeling he had long forgotten since the grass died years ago when the Locust brought war to the surface. This place was untouched by death and chaos. It was perfect.
The laughter grew louder that it warranted investigating. Where was he? What was this place? Turning to look behind the tree he noticed silhouettes in the distance of figures that seemed known to him. He stood, frozen unable to come to terms with what he was seeing. How could it be?
"Daddy! Daddy!" he heard the smaller of the figures yell together as they rushed toward him. Dom couldn't move. His heart was nearly bursting through his chest with joy as the faces of his children came to light. Tears formed in his eyes as he knelt down quick to sweep both of his beautiful children into his arms and held them as tight as he possible could. In a place that felt so distant now he remembered how their faces almost became a blur and yet here they were.
Dom felt his chest clench as he tried to keep those tears from overflowing but to no avail as he kissed their foreheads and continued to hold them tight. "We missed you" they would say over and over in unison.
In his arms was his life, his world. His son and his daughter that he had lost. They felt as real as the day they were born. He could feel their hair on his arms and the scent of peanut butter and dirt took him back to a place he had missed for so long.
Wrapped in the moment he had not taken notice that the love of his life, his beautiful bride was standing before them. A smile that could light up even the darkest skies brought his attention to her beautiful face. The memory of the day he lost her completely was void from memory. "We've been wondering when you'd wake up." She leaned forward and placed a kiss on his forehead, wiping his tears away as the kids smiled and watched. "You're home now, Dom."
"I'm home." He said softly as he pulled Maria into the hug. All the words he wish he had told her before were no longer necessary. They had all the time in the world now.
Everything that made Dom whole was now back within his grasp and he knew that in this place, this Heaven, he'd never have to let them go again. His love, his life, his reason for being. He hadn't felt this complete in the longest time.
