A smile is a very simple thing, when you think about it. Nothing more or less than the contraction of facial muscles. But still it manages to convey so much. From a gleeful, 'Oh my god the most amazing thing ever in the entire history of the entire universe just happened to me!' to a strained 'No, I'm not okay…but I'm coping'. Yazoo had seen a lot of smiles. Thousands, some might say, though they were never directed at him. He watched the human's smile at each other and the world, but never at him.
He'd tried to copy a smile once; he was a clone after all. A carbon copy of someone else. But it hadn't worked. The scientists had laughed at him, and scornfully told him that you couldn't take a smile. It had to be earned, through love and happiness – things he would obviously never experience because he wasn't human.
But they were wrong. Eventually, Yazoo found his smile. It took him till the last moments of his pitiful life, but he found it. And as he lay on the cold, wet concrete in the aftermath of the explosion, with the cruel, burning rain pounding down on him. It all became clear to him. And so he smiled. A painful smile. A broken smile. Because inside his smile, he wasn't okay. And he couldn't cope.

Edit people! Thank you very much for your advice about spelling Perfect Calm, I'll keep that in mind…and with any luck, there will be many more odd little one shots about side-characters!
