A Heart Full Of Love

By Laura Schiller

Based on: Les Miserables (2012 film)

She made him think of Heaven. It was not only her soft golden curls, her pretty face beneath her halo of a bonnet, or even the crystal-clear soprano he could hear from a distance as she spoke and laughed with the people around her. It was the simple fact that she was there at all, on a dirty street, helping her middle-aged companion hand out money, food and medicines with such unpretending grace.

He had known many ladies of her class, back in the days before he'd left his grandfather's house. When they performed their charitable acts, they tended to do it from a safe distance: giving money to a committee, donating their used clothes, feeling vastly pleased with themselves for what took only moments to accomplish. But not this girl – she touched their hands, smiled at them, paused to admire a baby, without a single trace of fear or revulsion. These untaught, unwashed and miserable people were equals in her eyes.

Here were all of his most cherished ideals come to life. Whatever the cost, he had to find her.
