Disclaimer: I'm just playing with JK Rowling's toys. I promise to put them back when I'm done, whenever that is.
Spoilers: Half Blood Prince
Summary: They expect nothing from me.
Completed: August 15, 2007
Notes: I was having a bit of a bad day, with a bad mood, so I thought I'd sympathise with the devil for a little while. This is the result.
They expect nothing from me.
I can see it in their eyes as they watch me. They send me sympathy and see me as a Cause. Poor orphan boy. Parents didn't want him. No one loved him.
They think I'm damaged.
I'm more than that.
They judge me.
The small boy who can't do anything. Since he's alone in the world, he's nothing. I see it in their eyes as they watch me, study me. They pity me – I can feel it. It covers me as I sleep on their pull away cot. They blanket me in it; unwanted, unneeded. Un-trusted.
A charity case.
A face, like hundreds of others, who drift through their doors and waste away.
I will not waste.
I am not interchangeable with them. I am not level with them. I am above them. I am more than them.
They will see.
I don't crowd around the Christmas tree and beg for presents. I don't cry myself to sleep hugging a tired and tattered old stuffed teddy bear. Nor do I cling to their pity. I am not these children.
They think of me as strange.
I spend my time alone. Quiet, still. I don't parade myself around prospective parents like a prized puppy. And I don't whine or whimper when I'm not picked.
They see me as nothing.
They expect nothing.
They'll see, they'll learn.
"Tom? Tom, there's a man here to see you," the matron calls up to me. It's my eleventh birthday, and I can feel my life changing.
I'm on the brink of greatness.
I'll show them.
