Chapter One

"Hey." Marissa walked into the poolhouse shyly. Looking for Ryan when she realized that he wasn't in the bedroom, she called out for him. "Ry?"

"Marissa?" he called back as he walked out of the bathroom, fully dressed but toweling off his wet hair. He had obviously just gotten out of the shower. "What're you doing here? Where were you last night?" he asked. "You weren't at your house and Summer said she had no clue where you were! I thought we had a date!"

"I know we did, I'm sorry. I fell asleep at Johnny's."

Ryan was silent. He turned away to make his bed. "Of course." He muttered.

"What's that supposed to mean??" Marissa asked, getting defensive.

He turned back to face her, and he was getting angry. "God, Marissa, you always choose him before me!! We were supposed to have a date and you fell asleep a his house!"

"He's my friend!!" Marissa retorted, frustrated.

"Oh, yeah," Ryan scoffed. "Friend."

"Yes, friend!" she yelled. "But you obviously don't trust me!"

"Look," he said, trying to calm down. "I can't do this anymore. I'm the Luke in this story and I already know the ending—I can't wait around and watch it happen. So prove me wrong. You can't have both. It's either me or him."

"What?" Marissa asked quietly, taken aback. She was hurt that Ryan didn't seem to trust her anymore.

"Exactly what I said. Choose. Me, or him." Ryan stood firm.

Marissa didn't answer; she stood silently, looking at him with her clear blue eyes piercing his. She begged him silently not to make her choose.

"I was right. Get out." He said after a few moments.

"Ryan…" she pleaded. "This, our relationship, has nothing to do with him!"

"Don't you get it?!" he yelled. "Our problems all come back to him!! You're in love with him and I won't stay here to wait until you leave me, and I have to watch you two together. I can't, Marissa. "

"You want him. So get out." He said blankly, opening the poolhouse door for her. She stepped out but continued to say his name pleadingly.

"Ryan, don't do this." She whispered.

"Marissa, you did this. You chose him. It's over." He looked at her longingly one more time before slowly shutting the poolhouse door.

Marissa stood outside the Cohen's house, staring around her at all the closed doors of the poolhouse. She couldn't believe it was over. It couldn't be over. She loved him.
