A/N: I'm going to update Across Dimensions at some point. I'm having a writer's block with it despite it basically being plotted out already. Therefore, I am planning on writing a smaller, adventure story with fewer chapters (I hope). Basically, I hope the readers of this site enjoy it!
Summary: At this point, everybody knows who G.U.N. is and what they stand for. But, what if there was a whole other side of them that dealt with other villains from a human standpoint? They have their own villains to worry about despite Doctor Eggman. So, what would happen if their only anthropomorphic animal companion on this side of G.U.N. is asked to go undercover to stop a team up with the villainous Dr. Eggman and their greatest arch-enemy? Well, read to find out.
Chapter 1
Krystal stared at the monitor as she kept track of her teammates' positions. Their communicators acted like radar. The devices gave off pings which travelled to her monitor. It was a useful tool. She tapped the screen before sighing. Ever since she had been injured on a previous mission, the female Hedgehog had been given a communication role. She adjusted her headset as a loud buzz appeared through it. She winced before throwing the headphones onto the counter. She wheezed in pain before rubbing her ears. After a moment, she placed them back on her head.
"What was that?" she hissed into the microphone. "My ears are still ringing dammit."
"Sorry, Krystal," her teammate replied. "I got caught in a scrap, and I let my communicator hit the ground."
"Are you okay?" asked the hedgehog as concern floated through her eyes. "Does he know we've infiltrated his base."
"No, I got rid of them before he noticed," her female companion spoke back. "Thanks for the worry, Kris. I know you want to be out here just as much as we want to be here. You sit back and heal. You're good at this communication post."
"My degree in Engineering and Technology isn't going to waste then," replied Krystal sarcastically. "This side of G.U.N. is dull some days."
Her teammate laughed, "I agree. But, we do it because we're here to keep the humans safe and the few occasional sentient animal friends we have within our city as well."
Krystal pulled up a map of Hidden City. It was an accurate name. Hidden City was hidden behind a mirror barrier. It reflected the surroundings, so nobody knew the city was hidden within a jungle. It even had a warping system so if anybody came to close, they'd pass by and stay within the jungle. She closed the map before sighing. Humans weren't often seen on the planet. And, they were given bad names from villains like Eggman to name a few.
"Well, I'm glad we allowed some of us to explore and live in the city," she said. "Tolerance is the first step to acceptance."
"I agree," her partner said before her voice grew quiet. "Hey, I hear talking."
"I'm switching the camera on," Krystal said. "I want to see and here this too."
The hedgehog flipped the camera on before staring around the wall with Shania. A brown fox was talking to somebody on the TV monitor; however, Shania was too far away to get a clear visual on them. The fox's ears twitched as he animatedly talked to his video visitor.
"You're saying you have a plan to conquer the entire world," he said. "And, why should I believe you? Aren't you incompetent? Always being bested by that blue hedgehog?"
"Blue hedgehog?" muttered Krystal. "Shania, if he's talking about Sonic the Hedgehog, then …"
"Switch is talking to the Doctor Eggman," Shania muttered. "This cannot be good."
Krystal's attention turned elsewhere as a loud beep sounded. She turned to the radar map before making a noise. "Shania, Dwight is in trouble. You need to go help him." The radar was picking up mechanical signatures. "He's being surrounded by Switch's robots."
"I'll go get him and return," Shania said. "We have to tell HQ what we had found anyway. They probably want us to plan something to stop it."
Krystal chuckled, "They always do."
Shania and Dwight returned to their base of operations an hour later. They were bruised and scratched, but no major injuries were reported by either of them. Krystal appeared out of the communication room holding her side. After being shot by one of Switch's thugs, she was lucky to be alive. It went through her which was luck on her part. The wound had been cleaned and sealed by one of the best doctors in G.U.N.; however, it was painful and it hurt to move all that much at the current time. She grunted before removing her hand from her side.
"So, what do we do?" she asked them as soon as they shut the door. "If Switch is planning on teaming up with Dr. Eggman -"
"Then, we need somebody on the outside," said Dwight. He placed a finger on his chin. "We'll need somebody who would blend in and not seem suspicious to outsiders." His mouth formed a grin as he stared at Krystal.
"No, no way," she said while shaking her head. "I haven't been outside the city walls in years. I don't know what has changed or …" Her breath hitched. Eggman was the one to destroy her town and her family. She was the only survivor from that town. "I was found by one of the senior members of G.U.N. and brought here to be trained."
"You're the only one who can do it," came a gruff voice from the video monitor.
The trio turned toward the screen to see their commanding officer. They saluted before falling into a line position. Krystal winced before going to sit on the chair. She was allowed to due to her injury. Her ears pinned back though.
"Why me?" she snapped with a slight snarl. "What can I do?"
"You weren't born here. You know the outside world unlike Shania or Dwight."
She winced. He made a valid point.
"Besides, an undercover mission is right for you while your injury heals. You won't be stuck inside either."
Damn it. He was playing to her sore points at the moment. No fair. The hedgehog whined before she gave in as she sighed, "Alright. I'll do it. I'll venture outside the barrier to figure out what Eggman is truly planning that he didn't tell Switch. Because, I know he has a bigger plot in mind." Dr. Eggman always had a bigger plot in mind. She stood from the chair before moving to leave their command center. They were done at the moment, so they could go back within the city itself not one of the outlying towns that were protected by the barrier.
The grey furred hegehog placed the hood of her shirt over her head. Her ears popped through the holes. She was not happy at the moment. The details of the mission were given to her as soon as she returned to headquarters. Her undercover mission had a set of rules she had to follow. It gave a bad taste in her mouth. Krystal thought about the rules as she waited for her clearance to be approved to leave the barrier.
1. Do not let slip about the city.
2. Do not get too close to those you will be interacting with - this is only a mission. Nothing else.
3. Not one being should know you're a G.U.N. agent.
4. Nobody is an exception. Do not feel like anybody would be an exception to these rules.
5. Report back to HQ every week. If you fail to report back, we will consider you rogue.
Her eyes flickered open as she heard the siren as a small section of the barrier was dropped. Krystal made sure she had everything before walking outside the city's barriers. When she turned to say something, the city had disappeared. The hedgehog sighed before she began her trek through the jungle. They could have found her a ride or something. She grumbled while holding her side. It was starting to hurt as well.
"Well, Kris," she muttered. "You got yourself into a fine situation."
Her ears flickered as she heard shouting and sounds of laser fire. She made a noise. There was a battle so close to the city? And, she had to leave at the perfect time, huh? The female hedgehog moved closer to the battle before peering around some trees. Oh. Well, it was a normal thing then. Dr. Eggman was attacking his archenemy and said enemy's friends.
"Hey, Egghead!" Sonic taunted. "You should build better robots. These are too easy to defeat."
Doctor Eggman growled as he pushed a button to send more robots at him. The blue hedgehog and his friends leapt into action. Krystal made a noise as she felt a rumble under her feet. She turned to stare at a robot that had come up behind her. She knew it wasn't there beforehand. The hedgehog winced as it spotted her. She moved to dodge the laser it had fired which left her out in the open where everybody could see her.
"Sonic!" a two-tailed fox said. "There's somebody near the treeline. She looks like she's injured."
"I'm on it, Tails," he said before dashing toward Krystal. He scooped her up in his arms before dodging the fire from the giant robot. He placed her near a pink hedgehog before turning toward Eggman and his robots. He flicked his nose. "Take care of her while I do with this. Okay, Amy?"
Amy nodded. "I'm on it." She turned toward Krystal before giving her a smile. "Hi, I'm Amy Rose. But, you can call me Amy. Are you okay?"
"Old injury," wheezed Krystal. "I'll be okay." She sat on the ground for a moment before standing. She gripped her side before relaxing her grip on it. "Okay, all better."
"Are you sure?" asked Amy.
"I'm pos - Whoa!" Krystal grabbed Amy before moving her away from a laser blast. She snarled a bit. This was ridiculous. She was to follow along with Team Sonic to find out if they knew of another plan Dr. Eggman had in mind, but she didn't want to get into a fight with them. "Maybe focus on the more important thing at hand, okay?" She smiled at Amy.
Amy made a noise. "You are the more important thing! Eggman is not as important as the wellbeing of others!" She was heated about this subject Krystal had decided. The hedgehog rolled her eyes. "Fine. But, I think Sonic has taken care of most of them." She pointed to him finishing off the last of the robots. "I guess he really is the fastest thing on land."
"You know it!" Sonic said as he stopped beside her. "So, are you okay?"
"Old injury," Krystal said as she shrugged him off. "I'm okay. It stopped hurting a few minutes ago. Anyway, do you happen to know a way out of this jungle? See, my town was destroyed by Dr. Eggman, and as far as I can tell, I'm the only one that has survived. I'm trying to find a place to live, but I got lost." She was, at the very least, telling a partial truth.
"Yeah, we can help you out of the forest," said Tails as he landed beside her. "In fact, I can do one better!"
Krystal decided she did not like flying. She made a noise as her feet touched the ground. "Never again," she said which caused Tails and Sonic to laugh.
"Not much of a flying hedgehog, huh?" teased Sonic. "Shame. Flying is fun."
Krystal gave him a look before sighing. "Yeah, I'm not a fan of flying." She stood straight before stretching her arms over her head. "Well, I should be going. Thanks for the lift."
"Do you have anywhere to stay?" asked Amy.
"Well, no," said Krystal as she smiled a bit to herself before turning to Amy. "I figured I'd find a place to crash."
"You can stay at my place," she said. "I have plenty of room. And, I would love the company." She seemed really excited about the idea.
Krystal laughed. "Sure! By the way, my name is Krystal. But, you can call me Kris."
