The air was still outside and the early morning sun made the classroom glow golden. Andy sat in the front row, tapping her pencil in a rhythm on the metal leg of her desk.

'Hey Andy' Serena said, pulling out the chair on the desk next to Andy's.

'Oh, Serena! I didn't know you were doing biology'

Serena laughed 'either did I. It was very last minute. I decided food studies wasn't for me'

'Thank God' Andy smiled, 'I was sweating here thinking I would have to deal with surly Emily alone' she said, rolling her eyes and motioning to the back row where the red head sat bolt upright, frowning at her laptop.

'She's so cute' Serena said fondly.

Andy laughed, 'I have no idea what you see in her but I wish you'd just ask her already'

'I have, multiple times, she just doesn't get the hint' Serena sighed. Just then the door swung open and Andy spun around, her dark brown eyes meeting the crystal blues of the new biology teacher. Andy froze. She'd never seen this teacher before and as soon as she laid eyes on her she knew she was in trouble. She was gorgeous. Her silver hair shone in the bright orange morning sun and she walked in with absolute authority, a cool calm emanating from her.

'Andy?' Serena asked, noticing Andy's distraction and turning to see what she was looking at she muttered 'oh Andy…' with a smirk. Serena had always known about Andy's attraction to girls (it was one of the reasons they clicked so well), but she'd always dated guys, never taking much of an interest in the girls around them. Now she knew why. Andy was playing a totally different ball game.

'Silence' came the soft but powerful voice from the front. Surprising the noise in the room lowered, all eyes turning curiously at the sound of a new voice.

'My name is Miss Priestly, I will be your senior year biology teacher. I will have no nonsense and no talking back. Asking questions is always encouraged, after all, no scientist ever found results without first asking a question.' She looked around, her eyes once again meeting Andy's. Andy squirmed under her gaze.

'As I'm sure you have learned from your previous years, learning biology is not just about functions and systems, but having knowledge of the life around you. This knowledge allows for a deeper appreciation of the beauty of the connection of all of life around us and for a love of the wonders of evolution and the natural world.' Miss Priestly said all of this with a breathy, lilting rhythm, the rich tone of her voice coating Andy like honey.

Jesus, Andy thought, I'm so screwed.

Miranda looked around the classroom as the class started on their notes. She'd been nervous this morning, a class is always hard to get motivated when they have a new teacher, often seeing them as a fresh target, Miranda always crushed any such thoughts before they had a chance to get started and in this case it seemed to work well. They all sat up at attention once she started and she found that talking in a level voice helped too.

The girl in the front row with the brown hair and eyes looked up at her again. Her name was Andrea according to the roll and when Miranda looked at her she blushed. Huh she thought that's interesting. She wasn't one to win a student's affection so early, especially with her straight to the point speech she did at the start of the lesson.

She'd have to keep an eye on this Andrea Sachs.
