Another fluffy J/C oneshot... let me know if you like this one or Just Sit better...
He had always hated to spend the entire day in the office; he'd rather be out actually doing something- chasing, tracking, saving the world. After he made it back from China, however, it was different. He didn't want the same things now that he had wanted before. Audrey was one of those things. After he married Chloe, he didn't want the field ops life anymore. She said that it was up to him, but he knew that he wasn't just risking his own life- that in some ways, he was risking hers too. So he resigned himself to a desk job- but he didn't mind so much, because he more time than Buchanan would ever realize to stare at Chloe and think of all the reasons he loved her.
He loved the way her hair looked when she stumbled out of bed with her eyes only half open. He loved the fact that she was a popsicle connoisseur, since she was lactose intolerant and couldn't eat ice cream, but did occasionally anyway. He loved the glare that she threw at him whenever she caught him staring at her. He loved watching her play computer hearts- she'd always quite as soon as she got the queen of spades. He loved the way she'd absent-mindedly spin her wedding ring around on her finger.
When she found out she was pregnant, she was terrified- terrified that she'd be a terrible mother, mostly, and that the baby would turn out completely socially inept, like her. He reassured her- that this was a good thing, that it would be an adventure, that they'd be okay parents, and that if they weren't, they'd learn and they'd get by.
Right away, she made a trip to the nearest bookstore and bought out their entire stock of books on parenting and pregnancy. He loved that about her too- that that was the way she functioned- always turning to the hard, cold facts. She read every book that she had bought, and he skimmed a few too. Kim helped Chloe decorate the baby's room. Actually, Kim did most of the decorating, because if it was up to Chloe, it would've been plain white and had a crib in the middle.
She hadn't wanted to tell anyone at work that she was pregnant, but before long, there was no hiding it. He'd see her walking around the office, and he'd think that her pregnant belly was just another reason why he loved her. She insisted that she could still work just fine, but Jack occasionally saw her shifting around in her chair, trying to get into a comfortable position, and he pretended not to notice the sharp increase in her number of trips to the bathroom. She worked all through the morning sickness, which lasted surprisingly long, and when the doctor put her on bed rest three weeks before her due date, she tried to work from bed, but Jack hid her computer on the top shelf of the pantry where she couldn't find it.
She was prepared for the baby, and Chloe understood exactly what was happening in her body. What she wasn't prepared for, and what she couldn't understand, was how you could love someone so much when you just barely met them.
While Chloe was on maternity leave, Jack replaced his staring down to Chloe's station with staring at the framed picture on his desk of Chloe sitting on the couch, holding the baby. He'd always look for a new detail in the picture- a new look on Chloe's eyes, a new meaning in his little boy's smile. Sometimes, he'd stop typing altogether and stare at the picture. He'd call her several times throughout the day. And he'd never stop coming up with reasons why he loved her.
