In his thoughts he saw himself flying on a broomstick, smiling and the wind blowing through his hair. A bludger passed by him, only centimeters away. He could still feel the grin on his face. His first quidditch match had been perfect and he couldn't think of a better feeling than flying.

"Expecto Patronum", a silver haze came from the tip of his wand. But no patronus.

Barty had found the spell in a book from the library a couple days ago. Since then he'd spend his free time practising.

But he hadn't been able to conjure more than a silver cloud.

Another memory: his meeting with Regulus - his first friend - on the train to Hogwarts. They'd immediately bonded and after being sorted in the same house, they quickly became inseparable.

Barty raised his wand and spoke the spell. Nothing but a bright cloud.

As anyone could have predicted: nothing happened. "Stupid spe-"

"Wait", a thought crossed his mind. Rage forgotten. His memories clearly weren't happy enough to get the charm to work, but maybe a wish for the future would do the job.

An image he'd dreamed about came to the surface. His father, lying face first in the dirt. Nothing worth like the wurm he was. He would tower above him. The man begging him for mercy. But none would be given. He'd speak the spell. The spell he'd heard his father utter: "Avada Kedavra".

"Expecto patronum!" His lips pulled into a grin at the sight of the silver polecat running through the air. The shining animal looked perfect. Gracious, mischievous, beautiful.
