The Past

"By defending the planet Earth, you are also defending Venus. I wish you god-speed, soldiers. May you return home safe and sound once the war is won," the voice of the princess of Venus resonated in the cabin. Aboard the shuttle that would take them to the barbaric planet, Adonis watched his princess and her attendants becoming smaller. All too soon the sulphuric acid clouds replaced his view, then the vast expanse of space, and before long he was pledging his service to the Prince of Earth.

He dreamt of his princess every night he was stranded in the middle of the desert, never knowing when he and his men would be called to the battlefield, always wishing he was on Venus to guard her instead. When his eyes fell closed for the last time, it was her image that flashed in his mind as the battle raged on around him and ended with Queen Serenity sending the children of the Silver Millennium into the future.

The Present

"Back then, I thought if the clock of fate had turned slightly differently, then we might have become lovers." He brushed his thumb across her bottom lip as she leaned into his palm. This would be the only and last time where he could be as close to the child of Venus as he was now, and knowing his path was one to continue on forever, never reaching her, tore his heart to a million little pieces.

Extracting his cards from his pockets, summoning the power the Dark Kingdom had granted him to his fingers, he jumped back and attacked his princess. He hoped the information he had revealed to her would help her towards achieving her destiny. He also hoped she knew nothing was set in stone.

When he felt his body begin to disintegrate from her counterattack, he allowed a last smile knowing he had at least meant something to her in this life even if only for a short while.

The Maybe-Alternate Future

"This time, we'll finally be together, my princess, and nothing will take you away from me again," he whispered to himself as he looked down at the man lying motionless at his feet. Heart hammering in his chest, he dropped to a crouch and touched his fingers to the man's neck to check for a pulse. There was none.

The headlights of speeding cars shined into the alley every now and then, but none of the drivers thought to stop and see if the two men required any help. It was every man for himself in the City of Nemesis, and here, at a less respectable area of town, it wasn't uncommon to find drunkards sleeping in alleys or on the sidewalk. It wasn't uncommon that the police would find a corpse on the streets, either.

In the morning, the city's law enforcement would identify the dead man as Kevin Warren, a 32-year-old corporate lawyer known for his solitary ways. When Kevin joined his partner for a Friday night drink, he didn't know the slender Adrian had bribed the barkeep to slip poison into his scotch. He also never saw the maniacal glee that passed over his partner's face before his heart stopped. The police wouldn't find any evidence or suspect when they swept the bar that was Kevin's last known location. They would close the case by saying "hidden heart attack" was the cause of death.

Knowing this would be the last he saw of the silver-haired man in this life, he rose and headed for the direction of his flat where he knew a certain blue-eyed blonde would be eagerly waiting for him.
