My darling readers,
I've decided to start on a new short story. It will be a fairy tale adaptation. Here is what I've gotten to so far. I will update as soon as I have more. Please tell me what you think. If you want you can guess at which fairy tale I will be adapting.
Enjoy!
Prima Ballerina
"When a small child, I thought that success spelled happiness. I was wrong, happiness is like a butterfly which appears and delights us for one brief moment, but soon flits away." Anna Pavlova
The audience rose as Saint Saens's "The Dying Swan" played to an empty stage.
She stood as the last dancer took her bow. She blinked back tears of delight and amazement; Her hands were swollen from clapping. Each time was the same as the first time she saw them, the beautiful ethereal beings draped in their incandescent gossamer gowns. Her mother had brought her to see "Sleeping Beauty" when she was eight.
Her mother came home after delivering the cleaned clothing to their owners.
"Nastasia, come here." Her breathing was labored after having to trek all day through St. Petersburg in her wooden shoes, the only type that she could afford.
"Happy Birthday, Sweetie." She held in her hands two golden tickets. Nastasia didn't know what they were at the time but she was soon to find out that they were the tickets to her dreams and to the events that would shape the rest of her life.
That night they attended the theater. She had never been there before. She remembered holding on to her mother's hands, calloused from many washing cycles. At first she was frightened by the large crowd. They all stared at them but she didn't understand at the time that it was because they were out of place. She had worn her best dress. It was a pink full hoop skirt with puffed sleeves. There was lace around the collar but it was a bit torn from overuse. The pink was faded from continuous washes and it had some previous owners before she came to inherit it so was very dated in style. But as a child it didn't matter. Nothing mattered even to her now; nothing that is except for the dancing.
Nastasia was at the ballet.
