Evangelion Re-Form

Now, now let's hear it. I have to for the peace of my soul and I have to give credit where credit is due.

I don't own Evangelion nor any of the characters, hell I wish I did. Please for the love of god don't sue me I don't make any profit from this. The only profit is the satisfaction when someone reviews the story so please do.

I got this idea when reading some of the great fanfictions. Sadly many of those diamonds in the rough are left unfinished. I decided to expand and refine some of the ideas.

There might be some problems with my English since I am not a native speaker and I dont have any proofreaders. I will try to correct any mistakes I happen to see but I have only two eyes.

Chapter 1

Confusion of Infinity

NERV HQ September 26th 2015

Asuka emerged from the locker room in her trademark red plugsuit which was just slightly different than her usual one. There was a Mark 2 writing where her 02 designation was and under it was written "Test" in bold letters. Otherwise it was not much different, it had bit a different collar with a round seal for helmet and on the wrists she had more buttons differentiated by color yellow orange and green. The material felt bit thinner but hugged her curves the same way. If anything. It was more comfortable yet she felt more exposed at the same time wich was interesting contradiction.

"Ohh good you are here." Said Ritsuko acknowledging Asuka's arrival to the briefing room. She could see Shinji already standing there fidgeting also wearing the new plugsuit. It was similar in cut to his old one but the color scheme was the direct opposite of the one Asuka wore. It was black with red details on it. The wrists had the same array of buttons as hers. On his head there was the same set of improved nerve clips which were black with red etched stripe on them.

"So, where is the prototype?" Asuka asked inpatient, hoping to get this over with as soon as possible. After all she was looking forward to the Friday night in cinema with Hikari.

"We are still not finished with the EVA prototype. It still needs to be fitted with custom made armor plating. The test will be held at Matsushiro in month or so. Today we will be testing the double entry plug systems and pilot to pilot synchronization bridge." Ritsuko informed handing Maya a report pad.

"I still think this is stupid. Two Eva's are better than one."

"Maybe, but this is no ordinary EVA. The way the angels are getting stronger, we will need to step up our game." Said Misato sipping her coffee and massaging her temples.

"Yeah yeah I know, let's do it already." Said Asuka viewing her hand in dismissal and turning to the gantry elevator entrance. Shinji followed right after her. He wasn't too thrilled about this either. Who knows what information that neural bridge might leak to Asuka. Asuka on other hand was sure of herself and her abbility to keep tight grip an all of her emotions and memories so she wasn't too worried about that.

"The black makes you look less like a wimp." Asuka said as they got to the platform.

"Thanks I guess..." Said Shinji inspecting the buttons on the cuff closely. Once they traveled few floors lover, they were directed to their respective sides of the scaffolding by the present technicians. Asuka eyed the black oval entry plug with suspicious look.

"How do I board this thing?" She asked looking around and inspecting the plug for a locking mechanism. On the plug, there were bold red letters that said ASUKA LANGLEY SORYU, there was also a manual release lever but that was hardly it because there was one time only emergency seal over it.

"There is an RFID chip embedded in your plugsuit. Just swipe your right hand along the name." The blond evil scientist informed. Asuka swiped her hand along the lettering and as she did, a line of embedded lights lit up and the hatch opened with a hiss of the rushing air. It went up like a door on a sports car. She climbed inside seeing Shinji who did the same from the other side. The interior was... Well it was futuristic to say the least. Even more so than her unit two and that was quite advanced. There were panels on the top of the plug that showed all sorts of information's but the biggest difference was the double entry system itself. Usually the control cradle was smallish and padded for comfort. This was similar but much bigger to accommodate two pilots next to each other on some kind of joined platform. "There goes my privacy." Asuka growled silently as soon as Shinji entered the plug and it became painfully obvious that there was no dividing wall between pilots. The padding of the seats was soft and much more comfortable. Asuka sat down briefly glancing at Shinji who also seemed notice and approve of the design.

"Well this looks nice. Way better than the unit one seat." Said Shinji getting comfy examining the controls.

"This is just a bad dream. First I have to live in the same flat with you and now we have to pilot together." Asuka scoffed not really keen on sharing such a small and closed space with the brown haired teen.

"Get ready and focus. We are going to start slow just in case." Maya informed as the plug lowered itself on the robotic pistons to the artificial sim core and started to fill with LCL.

"Due to the larger entry plug, the pressure will be slightly higher but we adjusted the suits to compensate."

"Great!" Said Asuka thinking her plugsuit might inflate which it didn't. It just somehow felt tingly for a few seconds.

"What was that?" Said Shinji surprised and almost yelped. "It feels ticklish."

"The suits were polarized to cope with the higher LCL pressure. The feeling should fade momentarily." Informed Ritsuko.

"I hope it will." Said Shinji fidgeting.

"Initializing A10 nerve connection." Maya said on the open channel. Asuka could feel slight tingle along her ears and the back of her head. These new clips looked the same but they sure didn't behave the same way.

"Does it suppose to tingle in my ears?" She said annoyed. First the polarization and than this.

"It might. It should also subside momentarily." Said Ritsuko turning to Maya. "Proceed with the linking sequence." Asuka could feel the tingling feeling to intensify and moments later she could hear and feel Shinji scream next to her. It was so strange. She could hear the muffled screams in the entry plug but also much clearer scream in her head or something like that. This pondering was short lived thou. She suddenly felt sharp stabbing pain in her own head. It felt like someone was poking needles inside her skull. They both screams muffled by the LCL. Sudden flashes of strange events invaded their minds. It was like their lives played for each other. Either that or it was complete gibberish. It felt wrong and confused them both. Asuka Could see herself playing in the sandbox as some browned haired woman watched her. She looked like wondergirl with brown hair. Shinji on other hand experienced something he knew for sure was not his memory. He sat at the chair looking at the cake with 3 candles and swiftly blew on them snuffing them out. He felt confused yet pleasantly surprised. He never celebrated his birthday. He never had a cake. Meantime in the control room people panicked hearing the muffled screams thru the com system. The main screen ran a lines of code swiftly.

"Stop this!" Yelled Misato demanding to abort the test. Ritsuko took the pad and inspected the readings tapping on the screen swiftly trying to cancel the procedure that obviously took on a life of its own.

"Sync ratio 120% and climbing." Exclaimed distressed Maya.

"The system won't let me in. I tried to shut down the A10 connection but it doesnt respond." Said Ritsuko tapping at her pad. Her breathing got faster as did her typing.

"Sync ratio now exceeding 250%" Informed Maya her voice muffled by the screaming duo of pilots. Asuka was holding her head screaming her lungs out and Shinji seemed no better off. Her mind filled with sorrow as she looked at the tall figure dressed in dark clothes leaving her standing at the train terminal. She clumsily searched for Shinji's hand in the darkness of the entry plug dimly lit by red emergency lighting. Just when She managed to interlock her fingers with his everything went dark.

"Now. Got it. System offline." Ritsuko said satisfied wiping few droplets from her forehead. "What is the status of the pilots."

"We have no readings." Maya clasped her hand over her mouth in shock.

"That is impossible. Did their plugsuits sensors somehow overloaded? Give me a visual." Ritsuko demanded as she switched the internal cameras to the main screen. The only thing that could be seen in the view were two empty plugsuits and two pairs of neural linking clips floating around in the LCL. "Ohh crap!" Ritsuko said standing stunned and looking on the main screen.

"What do you mean? Where are they? What happened?" Misato demanded to know frightened.

"Their ego borders had to crash and their A.T. fields collapsed." Ritsuko said absentmindedly.

"What does that mean? Where are they?! Did you just kill them?!" Misato panicked shaking her head.

"No, there is still chance to get them back. They are not entirely gone. It will be hard but there is a small chance they were absorbed to the core." Ritsuko explained sweating. Misato had just enough of this and pinned Ritsuko to the wall. She was furious and confused.

"These are kids you are talking about! Kids...we use to fight our battles... You just had to tempt fate. You knew this might happen and you went with it anyway!" Misato yelled at her seemingly former friend. The rest of the bridge crew looked at the two shocked.

"Calm down Misato. I admit, that there was a chance this might happen but it was acceptable risk. The chance was less than 5%." Ritsuko said with indifference in her eyes.

"5%?! What part of what I said you failed to understand?! They are just kids damn it!" Misato pulled her holstered gun without looking and aimed it at Ritsuko.

"Calm down. Getting worked up about this is not going to help them. You will need me to bring them back. I am just following orders. Same as you so we can all survive this mess." Ritsuko replied to the angry major. "You are no better than me. Sending them to battle and not knowing if they make it back." Ritsuko said with indifference in her eyes as if she didn't care if Misato pulls the trigger.

"Maybe so, but I always try to find a way so they will return safely. I will be keeping an eye on you! You better get my kids back!" Misato said enraged as she pulled Ritsuko by the collar and holstered her gun. "If you fail I will come for you." With that Misato left the room leaving Ritsuko standing there shocked and the rest of the bridge crew stunned.

"As do I Misato." Called Ritsuko. "You heard the major, let's get to work." Ritsuko ordered the crew looking towards the entry plug seeing Misato standing on the metal scaffold looking towards the ominous black entry plug.

NERV HQ September 11th 2015

Ritsuko walked to the large and dimly lit office that belonged to the commander of NERV. The results of her research were interesting indeed.

"I concluded my research commander. The third and second child exceed our expectations. The connection that we observed in the battle with Gaghiel and developed for the fight with Israfel proved to be strong enough to proceed with our previous scenario." Ritsuko analytically informed the commander who smiled under his folded hands.

"Excellent. It looks like the tree finally bears some fruit." He mused out loud.

"Indeed it is. I ordered the Mark 2 to be prepared for transport by second division at Berlin." Ritsuko said placing a pad with information's on the commanders table.

"That won't be necessary. I will take care of it and oversee the transport myself. This project might prove to be crucial to our survival." Said Gendo unraveling his hands. "What is the progress on the dummy plug system?"

"We are close to the functioning prototype but I doubt it will be able to fully replace human pilots."

"Your doubts are noted. Proceed according to the plan. That will be all. Dismissed." Said Gendo picking up a pad from his table and turning his attention to it. Ritsuko left with a feeling of unease she rarely experienced.

Asuka woke up in what looked like a train she used to ride from the geofront. Her neck hurt from the awkward sleeping position. It felt weird, the whole train car was bathed in direct evening sunlight that made it feel like everything had a orange hue to it. She rubbed her throbbing forehead and aching neck. It hurt to think but she wondered how she got here. There was a test and then something went wrong, than just plain pure pain. Was it a nightmare? It wouldn't surprise the young German if it was. After all the nightmares were getting worse with each passing day. It had to be the stress. She could still feel the scolding heat of the Volcano on her skin sometimes. Her previous mission wasn't exactly smooth. She looked around spotting familiar figure sitting there on the other end of the car.

"Hey Shinji." She called. Nothing... The boy didn't even flinch. He was wearing his school uniform and listening to the darn SDAT. It irritated her to no end seeing him listening to that antique device of his days on end. Sometimes she wondered what kind of music he listened to. Asuka decided to stand up and shake that baka to snap him to reality. The boy suddenly opened his eyes and stared at the redhead taking the black earplugs out.

"What do you want Asuka?" He said looking and sounding bothered and then stopped. "Wait! Where are we? What happened? Weren't we just a..."

"Yeah that is what I want to know." Said Asuka slipping her right leg from the rail next to Shinji and sitting on the seat next to him which happened to be 90 degrees to the one Shinji sat on.

"We... were in an entry plug weren't we?" Shinji asked putting the SDAT player on the seat to his left. "I remember we were together in the new dual system entry plug and than... My head started to hurt like someone..."

"Like someone struck thousand needles to it right?" Asuka finished the sentence remembering the pain.

"Yeah." The boy nodded. "But where are we? I mean how did we get here?"

"How should I know! Since we remember the exact same thing it means it wasn't a nightmare." Asuka tried to deduce with the help of her superior brain power. "Hey! What are you staring at?!" She yelled at the spaced out boy who was looking her way but seemingly past her.

"That wasn't here a minute ago." He pointed at the object dangling from the ceiling of the train car. Asuka turned around and her blood froze right in her veins. The sight was something she didn't expect, not ever in nine hells.

"What kind of sick joke is this!" She yelled after regaining her composure. She stood up and ripped the hanging doll from the string it hung on and tried to throw it from the window. When it didn't budge she threw it to the bin and quickly closed the lid.

"It felt kind of familiar." The boy said trying to figure out why. Asuka got angry and grabbed Shinji by the collar of his shirt.

"Don't play tricks on me Ikari." She yelled prepared to slap him. Suddenly when Shinji almost winced at the incoming strike Asuka stopped. They were suddenly sitting in dining room which both quickly recognized as the one on the Over the rainbow aircraft carrier where they first meet. It was empty accept them sitting there and everything still had that strange orange hue to it.

"What is this?! What is happening?" She said blinking unable to comprehend the situation she shared with the third child. "And why are you wearing my plugsuit? Did you like it the first time around? I bet you did." Asuka burst out laughing.

"You are one to talk." Shinji pointed at her sporting the same black and red plugsuit Shinji wore to the test plug.

"Mein gott! This is seriously weird." She said tugging at the material that was constricting her chest in a painful way. Why was she wearing Shinji's plugsuit anyway?! Something really didn't add up here. Suddenly she saw Shinji freeze looking at the table. She looked the way Shinji had his eyes set and found a pair of glasses on the table. She took them examining the shape and material. They looked familiar.

"What are these to you? Why you suddenly froze?" Asuka asked holding the glasses over Shinji who jumped out of the chair away from them like they were some kind of wile toxic torture device.

"This is impossible! They are my father's glasses." Shinji blubbered out.

"This is seriously weird. In a messed up and weird way." Asuka said placing the glasses on the chair next to her out of sight of trembling Shinji. He looked kind of silly in her plugsuit shaking like little rabbit. Suddenly both of them were standing on the deck of the carrier looking over the railing to the open sea.

"This have to be some kind of a sick nightmare or something." Asuka stated with a disgusted undertone to her voice.

"Then how come we are dreaming it together?" Shinji asked looking down on himself. It was strange to see the red plugsuit once again on his frame. It even somehow felt comfortable now. Unlike the last time. He slid his hand along the contour of his waist down to his hip.

"What are you doing you sick pervert!" Asuka said noticing what was Shinji doing. She tried to slap him but suddenly froze. "What happened to your eyes? I swear those are..." She paused, seeing a frightened look on his face.

"What are you talking about?" Shinji asked relieved that the slap was stopped and yet the implication of the sentence sent shivers down his spine.

"You have grayish blue eyes don't you?" Asuka asked puzzled and a bit confused.

"Yeah, and you have vibrant blue eyes the color of summer sky." He said suddenly laying on the futon in the living room of Katsuragi residence staring at Asuka in front of him. They were still both in the plugsuits unlike last time they were in this place and position.

"There is something seriously wrong here. I mean. When I looked into your eyes before, I could swear I was looking into mirror." She said sitting up on her futon.

"Yeah it is crazy." Said Shinji tugging at the red neural clip on his head.

"Hey! You will ruin them! You have to release the clip." Informed Asuka leaning over Shinji trying to unhook the Red clip. Shinji winced in pain as the clips decided to stay in place refusing to budge.

"That covers the dream possibility." Said Shinji rubbing his head.

"Then where are we? And why the heck are we still wearing each others plugsuits. This can't be real." Asuka struggled to stand up and grabbed hold of the chair throwing it out of the open door to the balcony and over the rails down to the street in attempt to break this dream, hallucination or whatever it was.

"What are you doing?" Yelled Shinji blinded by the sudden flash of light. He could see he was walking down the street. The surrounding street felt familiar. Suddenly he heard laughter from behind. It was Asuka. He turned around to see her laughing her ass off. Even stranger. She was wearing his school uniform. Shinji suddenly realized there was something wrong. He felt his legs bare and straps digging to his shoulders. After quick look down he confirmed he was wearing Asuka's school uniform.

"The hell?! What is the matter with this... whatever it is?" He howled tugging at the skirt.

"I don't know, but that is priceless. It even suits you mein perversling." Said Asuka catching her breath.

"Ha ha, you had your fun. It would be better if you helped me figure out what the hell is going on here and why this is happening to us."

"Sure thing Shinchan." Asuka howled in laughter after one more glance. Suddenly the surrounding scenery shifted again and Shinji stood behind Asuka Near the doorway. He was again wearing the red plugsuit again and Asuka the black one. The door swung open and Asuka cried out in terror. There was auburn haired middle aged women hanging from the ceiling and next to her was swinging the doll Asuka shoved to the garbage can before at the train.

"It... can't be." Asuka stammered and took a step back bumping to Shinji."

Suddenly they were in the control room of the evangelion bridge in Tokyo 3 and they saw small figure of a boy reaching for the glass dividing the room from the EVA cages. Few more images flashed thru their minds as it all slowly faded to blackness.

NERV HQ September 30th 2015

"Well? Do I have to pull out my gun again?" Said Misato in semi serious tone standing in front of the safety glass in the control room.

"No. I think we are ready. This will be tricky since we never tried this with two people and the one attempt before resulted in failure." Ritsuko said sweating at the terminal typing in some final parameters.

"I hope it will work for their sake as well as yours." Misato informed the bottle blond doctor gesturing to her gun. Sure The blond was her friend from college but this was over the line. Not to mention all the things that Misato knew the dear doctor was withholding from her.

"It will work. I am certain." The doctor said looking hurt. Sure she was friends at college with Misato but that was a long time ago and She really didn't want to take any chances.

"Start the sequence." Ordered the doctor.

"All systems green and input is stable." Informed Maya.

"The core power levels are fluctuating." Added Aoba.

"Patterns seem to be forming." Said hopeful Hyuga. Typing on his keyboard.

"The core is fluctuating more rapidly now."

"We are losing pattern cohesion. The reformed ego borders are unstable." Maya said worried. Misato clenched her teeth resisting the urge to jump and glue herself to the glass.

"Increase the field density." Ritsuko ordered. Suddenly there was flash of light emanating from the sim core and a shock weave rushed outwards. It seemed to short out some of the equipment in the room and blew out few lights.

"Status!" Ritsuko yelled.

"Unknown. No readings." Maya informed. Suddenly the static on the main screen faded and the image cleared to that of the two pilots floating in the LCL filled entry plug. Ritsuko wiped a heavy droplets of sweat from her forehead and slumped down to the chair.

"Well done." Said Misato.

"Don't just stand there. Go get them." Ritsuko said to Misato who was still a bit shaken by the events and almost palpable possibility of losing her charges. Needles to say that as those words echoed around the room, Misato was already on her way to the holding cage and helping the medics to get the kids out of the entry plug swiftly throwing a sheet over Asuka and Shinji as they laid them on the stretches. They were unconscious but breathing. Ritsuko was safe, for now.
