A Way Out

A slim barely lit alley, that was all that stood between me and him. I didn't think as I raised the gun that I had unholstered from my hip, my hand however shook as I took a rather pathetic aim at the black shape which had disappeared while my brain was lost in a smog. I looked to the ground to see the wounded but stable commissioner of the police department staring at me. He looked weak but it didn't affect his famous glare, not one bit.

"Are you going to help me up or not, Ramirez?"

"I really should go after the bat sir." The commissioner snorted and continued to glare at me.

"He's long gone." I looked at the middle aged man, as he got up without any assistance. Clearly I'd been doing that for too long, since he noticed. "You're not going to shot me are you?" He oddly didn't seem overly concerned by the prospect.

"Only in the leg. The mob wants you out of the way; but I can't kill you. Besides if they really wanted you dead they'd send a professional."

"And why's that?"

"Even a cop like me, is still a cop." I shrugged before I deliberately shot the ground nearest the commissioner's feet. "Oops, guess I missed." I holstered my gun and walked off into the shadows – there was nowhere near the bats level of skill, it was just a walk.

Both the commissioner and I knew that I wouldn't be back; I also knew that the bat had seen it all from wherever he was perched, I think I had my way out at last.
