Author's note:
This fanfic contains spoilers, creative interpretations, and heavy speculation as to the meaning of Yume Nikki, almost to the point of being AU. It is simply me trying to flesh out the real-life traumas that caused Madotsuki's dreams to become as they are. Take all of what you see here with a grain of salt, and no, this is not a walkthrough-esque fic. I won't be going with her into the dream world at all, only following her through the unseen waking events leading up to the game. Please R&R~

Madotsuki was one of those people who, if faced with choices or events that she found frightening, slept.
If she lost a game of NASU, she slept.
If she lost her favorite writing pen, she slept.
If she got a bad grade on her report card, she slept.
If she got into a fight with her parents, she slept.
If she got grounded to her room, she slept.
All her life, her dreams were an escape. An escape to her own perfect world that she could explore, a world with no boundaries, a world with no people to make her feel stupid, ugly and socially awkward. A world where she didn't care about NASU or that pen or that report card, a world where her parents weren't there, a world to which her room was the gateway. Only in her dreams could Madotsuki be herself, without fear of scrutiny, accusation, or punishment.
Because, you see, Madotsuki was one of those people who, if faced with the choice to bend or break, would rather sleep.
