A strong blast of wind wheeled the young girl around, forcing her shoulder-length caramel-colored hair to stick to her face. She pushed her hair back behind her ears, exposing her amber eyes.
"Darn Zack, makin' me wait in this weather," she huffed, tightening her oversized scarf as she looked up. Usually the sky was clear, but today huge dark clouds were blocking her view of the sun. The girl couldn't remember a day this cold in her six years of life. Another girl, a few years older than the first one, bounded up to her. The older girl's short dark hair was hidden under a colorful wool cap.
"Hey, Seina, whatcha doin?" asked the older girl.
"Oh, hi Yuffie. I'm just waitin' for Zack. We were s'posed to meet each other here," responded Seina, angry that her best friend was late.
"Well, if I see him I'll tell him your lookin' for him," Yuffie said as she leaped away, off looking for someone else to play with.
"Stupid Zack. He's never gonna show up," Seina snarled as she turned. She started back the way she came, when she tripped over a black rock.
"Stupid rock, makin' me all trippy and stuffs," she huffed. She was ready to kick the rock when it suddenly opened its eyes.
"Wait a minute, rocks don't have eyes," Seina remarked. The rock then started to stretch, like it was woken up from a nap. It had two large yellow, pupil-less eyes, and two antennae on the top of its large head. As it stood up, Seina realized it was probably about two feet tall, though it looked smaller because hunched over like an ape.
"Aw, now ain't you a cutie. I'll call you Blackie," Seina said, oblivious to the fact that more of them were making the way towards her. She bent down to pet 'Blackie' but as soon as she was in reach, he bit her.
"Owwie! Bad Blackie!" Seina yelled. Losing her temper, the young girl punched creature, sending it flying into the others. Seina looked around and realized there were now thousands of the creatures she called "Blackie". Frightened at the large number of creatures, she did what any little kid would do-run toward the nearest house. The creatures chased after the girl, but she made her way to the nearest unlocked house. She shut the door and looked around; Seina was in a big hall with huge stairs leading up and away from the door.
"Hello, anybody home?" Seina shouted as she climbed the stairs. All she could here was her echo. The girl walked around the building until she came across a library. Seina spotted an open notebook on one of the tables. Although she couldn't read many of the words, she could make out a few of them. What really caught her eye, though was a crude drawing of the creatures she just escaped from.
"Heart-less," the girl read, "So that's what they're called."
"Yes, little girl, that is what they're called," a deep voice uttered. Seina spun around to see a man standing right in front of her. She did not recognize the man's long silvery hair, tanned skin, and cruel orange eyes.
"It would be wise not to disturb them," the man stated in his resonant voice, as he walked toward Seina. Suddenly, heartless began to emerge from the shadows in the room. They lunged at her, clawing they're way to her heart. The brave girl struggled, but the heartless easily overpowered her. The last thing she heard was the man laughing, before her world was masked in darkness.
