- He Says -
He writes the meaningless words to convince himself they're still true; if he stops writing, it will be an acknowledgement of his failure: his failure to uphold the vows he willingly gave, his failure to control the urges of a body he would have sworn he had complete control over.
So he writes—tells her of the endless flow of wounded (but not of the grim failures that make a person cling to another for support and comfort); tells her of the freezing temperatures of winter (but not that the cold makes it necessary for two people to huddle close together, to conserve warmth) and of the sweltering heat of summer (but not of how sweat glistens on bodies in the most enticing of ways); tells her of the impossible friendship he has found in this impossible place (but not of the evolution of that friendship, the way it has become so much more); tells her of how much he loves her (but not of the way that seems to be fading, that place in his heart becoming filled by someone else).
He signs the letter 'all my love' and knows it is a lie; carefully folds the letter into its envelope to avoid the lie, sets it aside, turns away from it and pours himself a martini to dull the pain, to make the lies more real. A hand snakes around his wrist as he goes to pour a second and he is pulled unresistingly from lies into reality—the reality of strong arms and warm lips and a body pressing against his, two forms molding perfectly together, as if they had been made for each other—a perfect fit. And caught up in reality, he can forget the lies, forget the false words, for all that matters is this perfect body, this real body, warm and close and here; and he can remind himself, as he leans in close, lips to ear, that not all the words he speaks are lies.
