Maka

I never for one moment thought I'd be involved with gangs by the age of seventeen. I was a good girl – I studied hard, made my parents proud, and never broke my curfew… But things changed. I mean, I was still a good girl. But I was slightly more bad now. When you live in a place like Death City, gangs, criminals and violence become the order of the day. Don't get me wrong, Death City is a great place and relatively safe if you lock your doors and windows after dark.

But we don't. We are the ones who venture out into the night. We are the ones who keep this town alive after everyone goes to sleep. We're also the reason why a lot of things get destroyed. We tend to get a bit aggressive. Ages ago there use to be loads of gangs roaming around – World War Three, She Devils, The Kings, Delay Dragons, Train Incoming… but they soon got disbanded or sent to hospital by other gangs and the police. Eventually members of different gangs merged together, new members joined, and in the end Death City had only two gangs still standing. Killer Angelic, 'Angels' for short. That's me. That's us. And Joyland – our rivals.

I always thought our headquarters were awesome. They were inside of an abandoned factory, that looked completely unused from the outside but inside was… well, cool. The main room was huge, like a big metal box, and its where most of the Angels hung out. There were mini fridges stacked with food, couches and two TV's. There were also knives and guns hung on the walls, ready for action – don't worry, we've never killed anyone! There were metal stairs leading up on both sides to a higher level, with ten doors running alongside the walls. They opened by touch and if you didn't know what you were looking for you didn't even know they were there. The middle one, number five, was where the inner circle gathered. The first doors on either side were bathrooms – the rest of the rooms were stacked with beds, mattresses and hammocks for Angels that had no home to return to.

'Maka, are you listening?' I looked up to meet Kid's golden eyes. Kid Death was our leader and he was quite strange – he was the eldest of all of us, at twenty one and I'm not going to lie, he was handsome. He was pale with pitch black hair that had three white stripes dyed into them and hazel eyes that looked golden most of the time. He always wore dark suits and two skull rings. He was serious but reliable and a good friend, even if he was four years older than me.

'Yeah, sorry' I smiled sheepishly at Kid. He nodded and went back to talking. This time I concentrated on what he was saying.

'Joyland had raided a group of Angels yesterday. There was a bit of a squabble… well, okay, there was a fight. Two park benches were in pieces, a tree was set on fire and a Police officer was sent to the hospital, not to mention that two of our people are now bandaged up and not moving anytime soon.'

'Yeah, but how many of their people are bandaged up and not moving anytime soon?' Liz asked a grin in place. A shadow of a smile ghosted over Kid's lip.

'Five'

'Score!' Patty and Liz high fived. Patricia and Elizabeth were sisters called The Devil Angels because they used to be proper criminals out in the streets. Then Kid took them in and they started living in the HQ. Patty was only fifteen, which made her the youngest in Killer Angelic, and she had short blonde hair and big blue eyes. Liz, her sister, was nineteen with long sandy hair, a fear of ghosts and a secret crush on Kid that only Patty, Tsubaki and I knew about. Tsubaki was another girl in our inner circle – I always liked her best out of all the girls because she seemed to understand me best. She was calm, collected and kind. She used to be a model for a Japanese clothing line at fourteen and then when she was sixteen she was part of Delay Dragons. Now, at nineteen, she was second in command of Killer Angelic and Kid's most trusted man…er, woman. And then there was me – four of Kid's closest friends and best 'henchmen'. Some envied a guy who could sit in a room filled with girls all day.

'The point is, Joyland will probably want revenge. Scratch that, of course they will want revenge. And when they come, I want you guys to keep it clean, okay? The mare is not happy with the damage, but he's not mad. Yet' Kid said. I rolled my eyes. Kid wasn't only the leader of Killer Angelic but also the son of the mare of Death City, Lord Death.

'Roger that!' Patty and Liz mock saluted. I nodded but I couldn't exactly promise I would keep it clean. I could deal with most of the Joyland members just fine but there was one guy that pissed me off so much I lost my cool. His name was Soul Evans. Kid stood up and brushed off his pants.

'Okay. Since you guys are free why don't you go grab some lunch and I'll see you afterwards, 'kay?' He said. We nodded obediently and he was gone with a quick wave. Liz sighed when he was out of earshot.

'Just tell him' Tsubaki said gently.

'Hell no' Liz said, getting up too. 'C'mon, girls, I have a craving for pancakes.'

'Seriously Liz, it's better to get it out. Just tell Kid you like him.' I said, stabbing at a piece of banana that kept getting away from my fork. Patty was inhaling her pancakes one after the other. Tsubaki ate hers like a princess. But Liz, even though she apparently had 'cravings for pancakes' just toyed with her food, and we all knew our dark haired boss was the reason for the loss of her appetite. She leaned back into the booth.

'I can't' she said miserably. 'For him I'm just an amusing little girl that he took in'

'You're two years apart' Tsubaki reminded her with a little laugh.

'Yeah, but…' Liz dropped her head in her hands and groaned. 'I just can't'

Tsubaki and I exchanged looks but decided to drop the subject in case Liz wanted to have a mental breakdown right there and then. Patty patted her on the back, having finished her food.

'Who do you like, Tsubaki?' She asked, batting her eyelashes at Tsubaki innocently, as a way to change the subject. I could have imagined it but for a second Tsubaki looked flustered.

'There's no one to like' she said, shrugging.

'What about that cute guy that you had patrol with yesterday?' Liz asked, her depressed mood dropped. She wiggled her eyebrows at Tsubaki suggestively.

'Cut it out' Tsubaki said, sticking her tongue out at her. 'What about you Maka?'

'Maybe Soul Evaaaaans' Liz sing songed. I dropped my fork on the table with a clang.

'Well, I've just lost my appetite' I said with a grim smile in Liz's direction. Someone approached our table.

'Did I hear my name?' as soon as I heard that voice my body froze. God, why, why, why, why…? I felt someone slide into the booth next to me. His arm pressed against mine and I clenched my fists so I wouldn't grab the knife in front of me and drive it through his thick, stupid skull.

'Hello Maka' I turned to face him.

'Soul'

He looked exactly the same as he did the week before when I had last seen him, save for a change of clothes. His snow white hair was sticking up and his grin was in place, his crimson eyes boring into me. Behind him stood two of his guys.

'Long time no see. We came to get a little payback for our guys but maybe afterwards we could have some fun' Soul winked at me. Tsubaki sensed the danger that crackled in the air.

'Maka, clean' she said urgently.

'Uh – uh' I said, half consciously, seeing red. God, he pissed me off. Before he could even blink I drove my fist forward. It connected with his nose and suddenly we were on the floor, throwing punches.

'MAKA!' Tsubaki yelled. I felt hands try to pry me away from Soul but I didn't let them. I could feel bruises forming in five different places but I didn't care. We rolled all over the floor, screaming bloody murder. I didn't even know what my fist was connecting with anymore. I realised suddenly that Soul had me pinned underneath him – which meant he had an advantage. I looked around for a weapon. The sun reflected off of something on the table – a knife. Without thinking I reached out and grasped it. I slashed it towards soul but he rolled off me just in time. The knife drew a thin ruby line on his cheek. I jumped to my feet, ready to kill him. Then the world went black.

'…and I told them to keep it clean but they demolished half the restaurant! God, the owner was mad…' I opened my eyes groggily and sat up. Imiediatly pain pounded in my legs, arms and face. I looked down. My left arm was covered in a bandage, as was my stomach. I had a headache and I knew I had a cut lip from the sting I could feel. I stared at the ceiling and walls, my vision blurry, and I recognised an all too familiar place – The Underground Hospital. Once I focused I saw Tsubaki and Dr. Stein in front of me. Tsubaki was explaining something to him. Dr. Stein had been a doctor for the Killer Angelic and Joyland for as long as I could remember. Before, he was also the doctor for Train Incoming and World War Three. He himself was once a member of The Kings. He was nodding to what Tsubaki was saying and I was about to speak up to make them aware that I was up when someone pushed me back down on the bed.

'Don't get up yet' Ms Medusa, the nurse at the hospital and Stein's assistant said. She had a mean look about her but she was generally harmless. She wore her dirty blonde hair in a braid under her chin and her eyes always seemed narrowed. 'From what I hear Liz took you out with a plate to the head because you tried to stab Evans. You needed a few stitches and you'll be sore from all the bruises for a few days, but you're lucky it wasn't anything serious.'

I gritted my teeth.

'What about him?' I spat.

'Broken nose – again. A few bruises, cuts. Two broken ribs. He really took the beating this time' Ms Medusa shrugged. 'He'll be fine'

'Shame' I said. Ms Medusa rolled her eyes.

'You really should try to get along' she said. She always said it, every time Soul and I landed in the hospital together. I hated how easy it was for me to lose my cool around him. I wasn't violent but he changed me into a killing machine. I plopped back into the bed with an annoyed sight. Tsubaki rushed to my side.

'Maka! Are you alright!? You were bleeding so much… Kid was so worried! We were all so worried!' She gushed. I smiled at her.

'Sorry' I said. She sat down next to me, relief painted all over her face. 'How long was I out?'

'A few hours. You missed patrol – it's getting dark now. You're excused from night duty' Tsubaki said. I nodded.

'You guys get into way too much trouble' Dr. Stein said, coming to stand next to me. 'I should start charging you for this. Or you should at least let me dissect you.'

'That's okay' I said bluntly. He shrugged.

'Well, I hope the next time you land here it's not because of Soul and vice versa. You guys argue like an old married couple' his words send a pang of anger through me but I grumbled a 'yes, doctor' before turning to Tsubaki.

'Let's go home.'

Sorry if this was a bit OC :/ I really hope you liked it! Please, please, please review!
