Iruka was glad the school day was over. Even though all of his students were there of their own free will they still tended to get really fidgety after a few hours of studying. It didn't take him long to gather up the chalk boards they had used for practicing their math and straighten up the house for the evening.
He was almost through making supper when Kakashi walked in and shed his sandels.
"I'm home." he greeted Iruka with a smile and came to sit beside him in front of the fire.
Pouring Kakashi a cup of tea Iruka grinned widely, "Welcome home." he replied handing the small cheap cup to his housemate and dearest friend.
As Iruka finished up preparing dinner he told Kakashi all about his day with his students, grinning and chuckling the whole time. "Kids never change," he laughed. " they say and do the funniest things."
"I'm glad you had such a good day, Iruka." Kakashi smiled, his heart warmed to see Iruka so happy. " We managed to finish the roof on Taro's and Kimiko's house today. They were happy to have that over with and they gave me more money than I had asked for." Kakashi took his bowl of rice from Iruka and began eating.
Iruka placed the sliced tofu between them and then asked "So does that mean you are going to talk to Yoshi tomorrow about starting to dig that well?" Iruka placed a pickle on Kakashi's rice and one on his own.
"Actually, I spoke to him on the way home and we are all set to start digging tomorrow. I hope it doesn't take to long to hit water." Kakashi grinned at Iruka knowingly. Iruka always saved up enough money so that they could each have one pickle of something at every meal.
"I hope so too, the additional water will make it easier on the small ones in the district" Iruka nodded sagely.
Later after eating and bathing Kakashi was banking the fire while Iruka laid out their futons. Iruka looked up to tell Kakashi that he was thru and he saw his partner staring into the red coals with a dark frown on his face. Clearring his throat lightly Iruka padded over to the brooding man. "Whats wrong Kakashi?" the brunet asked gently.
The silver haired man sighed and turned to look at Iruka. "I saw a couple of them today." he looked into the brown eyes as he spoke.
Iruka raised his eye brows and replied. " You mean the ones in black?" Kakahi nodded as the two stood and started climbing into their futons.
As Kakashi got comfortable he continued."One was covered in his own blood I've never seen one injured before. They both stopped for water and then hurried on." Kakashi sighed again while Iruka lay beside him staring out into the darkness. "Do you ever think we are cheating by not joining up and just living our afterlives this way, Iruka?"
Iruka rolled over to his side facing Kakashi. " No, I do not. Kakashi we were very lucky to die together and get to spend this time together, we gave everything, especially you, in life to protect other people. I know we made the right decision when we came here. I didn't want to have to teach children to fight and die and you didn't want to spend all your time killing things. It is someone else"s turn now. We both deserve a rest."
Kakashi rolled over to face Iruka. "I know you're right. I just felt guilty for a minute because I was glad that wasn't you are me bleeding. Sweet dreams Iruka." Kakashi took Iruka's hand in his and closed his eyes to sleep.
Iruka squeezed Kakashi's hand closing his eyes too. "Sweet dreams to you too." He whispered.
