Transformers, GI Joe, Inhumanoids, Jem, and related characters are property of Hasbro. Spider-Man, X-Men, and related characters are property of Marvel. This is set in my AU of Red Witch's "Misfits Universe". This is an anthology fic for the purposes of world-building.

Chapter 1: M-Day

LOS ANGELES- DECEMBER 4, 1994:

"Sorry, kiddo. You're a little too young for this."

The infant Kimber Benton did her best to glare at her "uncle" Edward Augutter as he poured himself a glass of wine.

Sweet Mother of God, give me strength. For I am having to take care of my friend's baby girl.

Just then, the phone went off.

"Benton House. This is Eddie Augutter, filling in for Emmett and Jacqui-"

"Auger! Turn on the news!"

"Emmett? What's gotten into you? I thought this was just you and Jacqui going to Santa Monica-"

"TURN ON THE NEWS!"

Auger grabbed the remote and watched as the television set turned on.

"This is Hector Ramirez, reporting live from Los Angeles for Century 21 News. Let's not kid ourselves- THE WORLD'S GONE STRAIGHT TO HELL! Across the globe, people have been developing superpowers right out of the blue! This empowerment has been occurring seemingly at random, but thus far it seems to be most common in older children and teenagers. OH GOD, THERE'S A TEENAGE PUNK FIRING LASERS FROM HIS HANDS! THIS IS HECTOR RAMIREZ, SI- HURK!"

The image of Hector Ramirez being knocked flat on his back by a superpowered hooligan was rapidly replaced by a "WE ARE EXPERIENCING TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES" test card. At that moment, Auger turned to his wineglass and chugged it right down before turning off the TV.

"What's going on-"

Just then, the sound of footsteps was heard, and Auger felt a small tug on his pants leg.

"Uncle Auger, I can't sleep."

The bald former pugilist looked down and saw his eldest "niece", one Jerrica Benton, age 3 and a half.

"Neither can I, J. Neither can I." came the reply.

THE NEXT DAY:

"This is Hector Ramirez, alive and well and wishing he wasn't. Anyways, the scientists Bolivar Trask and Moira MacTaggart have developed an explanation for last night's events, which they dub 'Sudden Unexplained Genetic Expression'. The gist of the theory is that the affected individuals all possessed mutation versions of a particular gene located on the X chromosome, and because many of these individuals shared an age cohort- well, you can take it from there." the newscast played.

Auger sighed as he idly nibbled at his breakfast.

"These mutants just collectively got their period, and we're the bloodied underpants." he muttered.

Jacqui slapped her friend across the back of the head.

"Language, Eddie."

"What? It's not like the kids can hear us! Besides, you sent Jerrica on a playdate fifteen minutes ago and Kimberly's taking a nap!"

AUTHOR'S NOTE:

I know that in the comics that M-Day was a mass depowering of mutants. However, I personally think that presenting it as a mass empowering of mutants is an interesting twist on the idea- and would probably go a ways to explaining why people would clamp down on mutants.
