Dirge of the Dead and Blind
A terrible thing it had been, watching the path twist and turn before him. It had been easily distorted, dark earth sinking until it had been naught but a hopeless pit, offering up promises of godhood and power. Glimmering things, very much like gold, to the naked eye. To make things worse, his dearest friend had fallen for the bait, having been able to see long enough to grab hold of the illusion.
Watching him fall had been too much. Seeing the creature he'd become, writhing on the ground as his pleas fell upon deaf ears, insisting that it had all been for the greater good; for the path of least bloodshed; for his beloved justice. In truth, he had lost sight of those ideals long before enlisting, likely having made up his mind to join Aizen in hopes of a world that could never become. One wherein everything was peaceful, lacking wickedness and corruption.
Sadly, he'd been far too blind to see that he'd become that which he sought to wipe out.
He was not nameless, even with the blank silver memorial buried beside that of his friend. He had spoken of her often, relaying to Sajin that she had been the one who taught him the joys of keeping the peace. Even now, the captain couldn't help but wonder how Kaname had lost himself in this. How, with such a kind spirit as his aid years before, he could have fallen from grace.
Perhaps her death had been the key. The trigger on the loaded pistol that had sat idly in his hands. The weapon had been discharged, leaving him vulnerable and alone. He had likely sought meaning, having lost his nameless friend at such a time. This, the captain prayed, was all that had happened. It certainly wouldn't absolve the deceased of his crimes, but it would lay to rest his wondering heart.
