"It's okay. I am going to see you later."
But I wasn't okay. Emmett was giving Elle to Warner, her only love. He should've known, no matter how much he wished Elle was his, her heart belonged to Warner. She went across the country, got into Harvard Law to get him back. And Emmett was just a friend. It wasn't him that convinced her to stay. Even now, he couldn't believe he had fallen for a girl like Elle Woods. And now she's probably giving her heart away. He walked back to his apartment alone. It wasn't long until his phone rang. It was Enid Hoopes.
"Yo, Emmett! Didja hear?"
"Hey, Enid. What's up?"
"Warner proposed to Elle!"
Emmett's heart sank. "And?"
"Well, I couldn't hear that last bit, Vivienne pulled me away from the door. But I think our girl's getting married!"
"Wow," that's all Emmett could muster. "That's, great."
"I know right!" Kay, I gotta go. I'll see ya at the party, for winning the case?"
"Yeah,"
"Bye!"
Emmett hung up the phone with shaking hands. Elle undoubtedly said yes. It was what she always wanted. After all this time. He sighed and laid on his bed. He suddenly dreaded the party, but as usual, he had to put on a fake smile. Pretend to be happy for his friend. He just had to spit it out.
"Congratulations."
The party was going on now. Emmett was just walked up to Elle and said it. They were at Vivienne's house, in a private corner away from everyone else. She was standing away from Warner, which was odd, but hey at least he could be alone with her. He told her it was urgent.
"Thanks Emmett! I'm so happy too. I fell like my life is so much better than before. I never thought it would happen."
"I did. I knew you would, it's hat you came here for."
Elle laughed. "I guess I did. It was fate, that I'm here. Almost a full year of Law school behind me, and I helped prove Brooke innocent, while learning to be true to myself."
"And now you're engaged as well. Congrats again on that."
Elle looked confused for a moment. Then suddenly laughed again. "I'm not engaged."
"But I thought..." Emmett took her hand, and there was no ring on her finger. "I thought Warner proposed."
"He did. But I turned him down. I've done so much, accomplished so many things this past year that I had no idea I could do. And I didn't have a guy with me. I don't need a man to be happy."
"Right,"
"So, what was so urgent?" Elle asked.
"I thought you should know..." Emmett began, then he stopped.
For all her life, Elle has been mostly defined by her hair color. Guys hit on her all the time, whether it was a professor, even if they had just been engaged five minutes ago shortly they proposed to Elle. And now, Emmett was going to tell her that he loved her. She was just proposed to, and before that she saved Brooke Wyndham from prison. If he told her how he felt, how would he be different from all those guys who just wanted to take advantage of her? Even if she did feel the same way, it shouldn't matter. I'll ask her next year maybe. She had to find her way.
"I just thought you should know how proud I am of you, little miss Woods comma Elle."
Elle smiled. Emmett's heart leapt. "Thank you so much. You've helped me so much." Then she kissed him on the cheek, and went to rejoin the festivities. Emmett's face flushed. He stared after her.
"See you next year, Woods comma Elle girl." No, he was never going to let her get away.
